A general election occurred in the Republic of Spain in February of 1936, bringing a government supported the left-wing parties to power. A few months later, conservative military officers protested the government of the republic, leading to a Civil War. The following 3 years resulted in fascists and conservatives trying to overthrow the Republic. The Communists, Socialists, Republicans, and the Anarchist’s were the groups defending the Spanish Republic. According to the Prime minister Manuel Azana in Document 1, “We want no dangerous innovations. We want peace and order. We are moderates.” The Republicans don’t want dangerous new ideas, and preached peace and freedom. According to Andres Marquez, a civil servant and member of the Liberal Republican party in Document 2, “The Republic attempted to introduce a new modern political mentality through moderate reform. Unfortunately, the Socialist Left tried to turn from the process.” The Republic opposed radicals, and advocated moderate reform. As told by Clara Campoamor, a Centrist Republican deputy in the parliament, Wives of workers refused to pay for bought items from grocery stores. They used the tough people with guns in the stores to enforce this. Republican volunteers aimed their guns at the windows. This is clearly unfair and unacceptable, creating more problems. An Anarchist party information bulletin (Document 10) stated they weren’t fighting for the Democratic Republic, they were fighting for the proletarian revolution. Confirming to Manuel Carabano, a worker and anarchist party youth member (Document 8), the Communists wanting to form a professional army to fight the fascists is a blatant mistake. Manuel Carabano thinks a professional army would lead to the making of a state, and states are oppressors. According to an Anarchist women's paper, Free Women in Document 11, “Still, every day in Spain we hear talk about liberty for the oppressed, but we never hear these liberators refer to the necessity of declaring women free.” These documents show the conflict within the Anarchist party.
