For the past 10 years I have gone to public school. Many times I have come home to telling my mom how bad the food was and that it tasted awful. The food is sometimes overcooked, soggy, and always unhealthy. The public school system spends more time finding the cheap foods rather than the healthy ones. Schools should value the quality of their lunches over the quantity. If the system began to value the quality of the foods it would improve the obesity epidemic, the school attendance, and overall health of our society. According to the USDA.gov webpage, “The variety of both entitlement and bonus USDA foods schools can get from the USDA depends on quantities available and market prices.” This proves that they value quantity over quality. They don’t even base their foods on value, only the cost. The USDA has to follow the Dietary Guidelines for Americans. School lunches might as well be the leading cause of child hood obesity. The CDCP also stated that the lower the family’s income typically produces the more children in obesity. Children whose families’ incomes are at or below 130% of the poverty level are eligible for free meals. These free meals are usually at very low at cost for the government to pay for and that means that they are not a very high value and most likely are unhealthy. It is not right that just because these children cannot afford much that they have to be obese due to the lunches that the government gives to them. It’s simply not fair. Besides the fact of the strengthened obesity epidemic, there is also a decreased attendance in the schools that serve poor lunch choices. The foods are not nutritious enough so the children don’t get enough nurturance, therefore they get sick more
