Politics in Orwell's 1984 as Compared with Modern Society
The book 1984, written by George Orwell, is a dystopian novel and cautionary tale of what can happen when a country is ruled by a totalitarian government. The novel was written in 1949, just after World War II. Orwell describes a country where the citizens are stripped of all rights and individuality, and are required to show full devotion to Big Brother. Any person that disagreed with the statements or ideals of the USSR would be committed to an asylum, which is similar to what they did in the book 1984. They both tortured and forcibly gave psychoactive drugs to anyone who disagreed with the party until they loved and venerated the party. The USSR used mental illnesses such as schizophrenia as an excuse to lock up anyone they disagreed with politically or any other adversary that was deemed a dissenter.
The USSR also rewrote the history of the country a considerable amount. “The Soviet Union’s history of rewriting history textbooks to remove pictures and information about politicians who were no longer supported by the Soviet Union. The Soviet Union made sure to rewrite past events to make Stalin and his government look better. This is the role of the Ministry of Truth in 1984” Wilber ( source 2).
“Trotsky was an influential politician during the beginning of the Soviet Union, but was expelled from the Communist Party after a power struggle with Stalin. This mirrors the character Goldstein because he is one of the founders. George Orwell wrote 1984 right after World War II as a warning against totalitarianism” Wilber ( source
