African Lore Research Paper

Folklore is the traditional stories, beliefs, and customs of a group of people. African lore is believed to have the power to hold the community together. It can hold the ancestors, the living, and those not yet born. Legends are based on history and retold. Myths are based on religion, supernatural beings, gods and demigods, and explain natural phenomenons. Fairy Tales are based on fiction, magic, imaginary creatures, and conflict between good and evil. Tall Tales are based history, blatant mistruths, and they are told and retold. Fables are based on fairy tales that teach lessons.

An African folktale is an anonymous, timeless story circulated orally among African people and meant to hand down knowledge and wisdom from parent to child, typically through tales by moonlight. African Folktale is tradition that evolved among enslaved African Americans in the 18th and 19th centuries. When slaves arrived in the New World from Africa in the 1700s and 1800s, they brought with them a vast oral tradition. Many values the African culture have are to aim at moulding character and providing children with moral values like honesty, integrity, courage and solidarity. Anansi was a very lazy spider that wanted to eat but didnt want to help his friends and told them hold a rope and pull on it when they were done cooking. He went to 8 friends and they all pulled at the same time and thats how spiders have 8 legs.
