The Rights of Animals Are animals property or part of the family? Do you think pets should have rights to be protected from being hurt? Most people think their pets are part of the family. Some of these people don't realize that their pets are not protected from animal cruelty. Animal rights is sometimes confused with animal welfare. Animal welfare is the alleviating the suffering of animals while they are being exploited without questioning it. Animal rights is the philosophy of allowing animals to have the most basic rights. Activists of animal rights strive to no hurt other beings. Although, some of them have different opinions on how to deal with these issues. Most of the cases are not reported. The cases that get reported are usually for dogs, cats, and horses. The unreported cases are mostly animal fighting along with other crimes. Animal fighting is illegal in all 50 states but people still do it. (HSUS) Under state and federal laws, animals are regarded as property. With this status animals are not able to get a civil suit to free themselves from cruelty. This gives owners the right to euthanize the pets even if they are healthy. Owners of the pet can go to court over abuse if there is enough evidence. If this happens the animal will have an appointed guardian to represent them. (Bjorkenstam) Animal rights is controversial topic. The organizations that are supposedly to help the animals may be good or bad. The abuse the animals face goes unreported. Dog fighting is the most popular abuse among with other animal fighting. Some of the animals can go to court for the abuse but this is not much help for the rest of animals
