An epic is a long narrative poem, made up of high style, it deals with trials, and achievements of heroes or great heros. Epics sometimes can celebrate significance of national, military, religious, cultural, political, or historical event. Heroic action as well as a variety of struggles is also shown through epics. Beowulf is the oldest epic poem in the english language, even though some people debate whether it is actually an epic poem. The poem was originally unnamed, until the poem began being presented with the name of the Scandinavian hero, Beowulf. Hrothgar's great hall is a setting, but it also acts as a symbol.
