The Murder of Brandy Vittrekwa. Most people do not realize how many Indigenous women go missing or murdered every year. It is said that the average age, or the median age of victims, is usually 29 years old. In 2016 about 5,712 cases were filed, but many were and were not really investigated. It says in the MMIW/G report, “The National Crime Information Center reports that, in 2016, there were 5,712 reports of missing American Indian and Alaska Native women and girls, though the US Department of Justice’s federal missing persons database, NamUs, only logged 116 cases.” To help show the murder of Brandy Vittrekwa and how, what, where, plus when it took place. Sadly, it states that the amount of cases that have been filed, which is 506 in the report, has most definitely been an understatement. It is stated that, “4 out of 5 Indigenous women have experienced violence”. This is similar to the victim, Brandy Vittrekwa, who was beaten to death. It also shows that most victims are murdered in more urban areas. Brandy happened to be killed around Christmas time, and left along a trail. On December 8, 2014, Brandy’s body was discovered in Whitehorse Mclntyre. Later on it was said, “Two months later Whitehorse RCMP told the Vittrekwa family they had someone in custody”. When Brandy’s body was discovered, she was seen with many bruises along her body. It is true that Brandy was brutally beaten to death by a young boy. Although it seems cruel, it was still unplanned and is shown as a second degree murder. Why would such a young boy ruthlessly kill Brandy, and what would his reasons be? The 17-year-old Brandy Vittrekwa was killed, like others, by someone who was angry and upset with her at the time.
