Franz Kafka, who died in 1924 because of tuberculosis (class notes), has seen his popularity grow. Even if it has been over 80 years since his death, his legacy and his work have influenced many artists and writers over the time because of his willingness to write freely and express his work in a way that most of the writers are not able to. Kafka had a complicated life because of his parents. “This additional burden had been imposed on him by his family, and his resentment ran deep. He hated his family in these fall months of 1912 as perhaps never before or since,” (Kafka 106). But, if you are not familiar with his personal life, then you might struggle or get confused by some of his work. Every story or an essay is connected to Kafka’s life in one way or another. Kafka had a complicated relationship with his parents, though more with his father. For example, Kafka’s perplexing relationship with his father is in an article by Jose Durval Cavalcanti de Albuquerque named “Letter to my father. “The Czech writer begins the ‘‘Letter’’ with an impressive statement of how much he is possessed by a fear of his father, to the extent of having a referential awe that ‘‘goes far beyond the scope of my memory and power of reasoning’’ (p. 3)” (Durval 230). Kafka’s goal of writing the letter to his father was to explain how the fear of him has caused extreme distress in his life and is still affecting him. Even though, Kafka has problems with his father, he also had a difficult relationship with his mother and his sister. Kafka’s passion for writing did not sit well with his family, which they despised of. “His family drove him to despair; and his depression was the more severe as he knew perfectly well that it was his fear of his father and his guilt feelings which delivered him into this slavery” (Kafka 106). “I was only just thinking how my mother whimpers to me almost every evening, that I should after all take a look at the factory now and again just to keep’s fathers mind easy, and how father has said the same thing, on his side, in a far nastier way with looks and in other indirect ways” (Kafka 103). Kafka talks about how his father has been dissatisfied of him not working at their factory and how he has shown his wishes in an abusive and indirect ways. In the article, Durval describes how Kafka was affected by all the tension: “He describes intense feelings of fragility, inferiority, incestuous fantasies, parricidal hostility, guilt, and the presence of a constant terror” (Durval 230). Kafka felt trapped with these things going on in his life at that time, which he relieved himself by writing. When, reading his work you can find little details relevant with his personal life. Kafka, can be a difficult to read because of his complicated life. Kafka did not chase or wanted fame, but after his death, people started recognizing his work and started to appreciate
