“Some people say progress is a bad thing. But try having a magnet in your chest keeping you alive.”- Tony Stark. Iron Man is a superhero every child dreams of being. He is a superhero that a child can easily dream about becoming. He was the vehicle used to explore a range of Cold War themes and so became a representative for the fight against communism. He first appeared in the comic book series “Tales of Suspense” in 1963, which was during the time of the never ending Cold War feud. Today his character is still alive and popular in live-action movies. Few other superheroes can compete with the originality and state-of-the art suits engineered by Tony Stark. Iron Man has through the years undergone many costume changes. Tony Stark’s only limitation in the evolution and pursuit of these ever changing suits of armour is his imagination and pioneering spirit as they change in size, colour materials and weapons used. “My armour was never a distraction nor a hobby. It was a cocoon, and now I’m a changed man.” In the first story Iron Man’s suit of armour was crude in design, bulky, grey in colour and made out of scrap metal. It was especially designed to save his life due to the fact that a piece of shrapnel had lodged in his chest and was making its way to his heart. A giant magnet supplied with energy from an arc reactor kept the shrapnel away from his heart, thus it was a necessity. The original suit was powered by “transistors”.
