The unlawful premeditated killing of one human to another with a target of female prostitutes. Jack the Ripper is a serial killer phenomenon that has stunned everyone since his first attack on April 3 1888 at 1:30 A.M. The well known serial killer has still not been discovered, however there have been suspicions he is an American by the name of H.H Holmes. The name Jack the Ripper entered the inquiry after the night of the alleged “double murder” of Elizabeth Stride and Catherine Endowes on September 30th 1888. Later in September a gloating letter was delivered to a London news agency, and it was this letter that gave rise to the legend of Jack the Ripper. The letter written in a boastful tone was delivered to “The Boss Central News Office”. The letter the Ripper wrote was titled “Dear Boss”, still unidentified who the receiver was. The letter mocked the police for not being able to uncover his identity. The letter also talked about murders he is going to commit and how he will commit these murders. The Ripper states in his letter, “The next job I do I shall clip the lady's ears off and send to the police officers just for jolly wouldn't you. My knife is so sharp I want to get to work right away if I get a chance.” The police were initially skeptical about whether this piece of correspondence actually had been written by the killer, and believed it to be a hoax. However, within a day of the agency receiving the letter two more women, Catherine and Elizabeth were murdered in the early hours of September 30th. Not only has Jack the Ripper victimized London, but his actions also take a toll on American society including other murderers imitating him in the U.S. American citizens have also been startled by his actions as they appear all throughout society in advertisements, books, and movies. Although stationed in London, his terror spread to numerous parts of the world. Jack the Ripper brutally murdered at least five women, the victims known as the canonical five. These murders gained widespread attention due to the gruesomeness of the killings and the fact the perpetrator was never apprehended. Jack the Ripper is still famous and known today because of how his identity has stayed a secret for all this time through this rain of terror. The combination of the gruesome murders, the unsolved mystery, the historical context, and the ongoing cultural impact has made the Ripper one of the most enduring figures in the history of crime. It makes sense given that there have undoubtedly been larger-scale serial killers since the time of the Ripper, who is only recognized for having slain five victims over a twelve to fourteen-week period.
