To start with, Joel Rifkin is a serial killer from the New York City and Long Island area who strangled between nine to seventeen prostitutes between the years of 1989 to 1993 but was officially arrested on June 28, 1993. Typically, he would hire prostitutes for the sake of company, but when it was "time" and/or when he got tired of their presence he would strangle them, collect trophies from the event to later reflect on, and then dump victims in the same occasion. Before he got apprehended he was on his way to dump his victim Tiffany Bresciani, a prostitute, who was initially from Louisiana. To resume, when he was captured and interrogated by police officials and openly confessed to several crimes he committed over the last four years and offered an extensive amount of detail regarding how he killed his victims and where he discarded their bodies. Ultimately, he was found guilty of nine counts of second-degree murder in 1994 and sentenced to 203 years to life in prison not being offered parole until 2197. Rifkin was later classified as a psychopath for he showed no empathy, had no remorse, had the capacity to understand the difference between right and wrong, and saw his victims as objects that were disposable. As previously mentioned, Rifkin was fond of prostitutes since his experience with them gave him a sense of control, a relaxed environment, and company when he felt lonesome. Ironically, prostitutes are noted as the most common victims under the stranger-victim category for “young-women and children are at the greatest risk of victimization, especially those who are alone or can be isolated (344). By all means, Rifken targeting those people in that category feed into his ego assuming he would get away with murder because they are perceived as people that are vulnerable, helpless, and easy to control since they go undetected in society. They frequently put their safety in danger meeting at random locations and encountering people without asking for a name and/or some type of identification. Therefore, their risky behavior allowing killers to believe they have a low chance of getting caught since their disappearance is unlikely to be reported.
