“Death, be not proud, though some have called thee Mighty and dreadful, for thou art no so?” (John Donne. Holy Sonnets 1-2). “Holy Sonnets” starts with the Donne talking about death, who he treats as a person. He tells Death not be proud, because it’s not scary as people think. After Donne published his sexual love and religion poems, he became one of the greatest metaphysical poets. Although Donne’s writing reflected his fear of unexpected death, John enjoyed literature, Being raised by a Roman Catholic family impacted Donne’s life, he had a personal relationship with religion which made him passionate to write poetry. Ever since his wife died, Donne became obsessed with the idea of death. Donne started to study theology, law, and anti-Catholic poems, also love lyrics and religious poetry. He wrote a poem called Holy Sonnet 17, “Since she whom I loved hath paid her last debt/to nature, and to hers, my God is dead.” He wrote this poem when his beloved wife died.
In 1623, John Donne started to feel seriously ill with fever. During his sickness, he started to think about his physical and spiritual illness. He went as far as composing his own funeral sermon “Death Duel” before he died. Donne devoted himself whole-hearted to religion and theology. He became a very successful man and a high sermonist.
