Imagine this, you are sleeping in your bed when something startles you awake. You reach for your teddy bear that you had from the first grade. You see a DRAGON!! A Komodo dragon, that is. This might sound like a fiction book but it is real for the villagers of Komodo in Indonesia, the island where the Komodo dragon is plentiful. The problem with Komodo dragons is that they are attacking villagers and killing their animals, but the villagers are unable to get protection. Since the Komodo dragon is endangered, it is protected.

Komodo is a volcanic island in Indonesia, which has a hot and dry climate. In the text "Giant Lizards of Indonesia," the author R.A. Wallami says that "The villagers live in houses on stilts to protect them from the dragons." But the stilt houses are not enough.

The law doesn't allow dogs on the island so the dragons are not scared away easily. The law also does not allow for the villagers to feed the dragons which means that when the dragons are hungry, they go to the villages and eat the villager's goats. Some solutions to this problem are building dragon proof gates around the villages and allowing dogs back on the island. To summarize, the villagers want to be safe but the Nature Conservancy will not let them do what they used to do.

To conclude, since the Komodo dragon is an endangered species and new laws allow them to be more aggressive, it presents a major problem for the inhabitants of Komodo island. The dragon saliva contains lethal bacteria that kills its prey in about a day. The residents of Komodo live in houses with stands underneath to keep dragons from coming in and eating them. Instead, the dragons eat their goats. The villagers want to live with the dragons in peace but the Nature Conservancy prohibits them from feeding the fat lizards, keeping dogs to scare the giant lizards away, or building a protective barrier.
