“The Monkey’s Paw” Writing Brishna Momand “The Monkey’s Paw” is a famous example of a classic horror story. First off, it presents a gloomy, dark atmosphere outside. The first sentence of the story states, “Without, the night was cold and wet...” This already gives the readers a sense that the outside world is very dangerous, and is a place you would not want to be--- It’s an unprotected place where horror comes from. But, the atmosphere changes as we’re taken to the White’s house, where it’s the exact opposite. Inside, “the blinds were drawn and the fire burned brightly.” It’s not cold and wet, in their house it’s warm and dry. As we all know, supernatural things are very horrifying. They are not supposed to exist in our world and, if they are they disrupt our lives, which causes an abundance of problems. This is exactly what the monkey’s paw did. When it came into the White’s hands their lives would never be the same. The sergeant tells us, “It had a spell put on it by an old fakir, a very holy man. He wanted to show that fate ruled people’s lives, and that those who interfered with it did so to their sorrow. He put a spell on it so that three separate men could each have three wishes from it.” When Mr. White did wish, that supernatural spell, or paw took away all his happiness, and gave him a bad life than he would have. And, another supernatural thing that came was their dead son Hebert. Once someone dies that is it, no coming back it’s done. But, Herbert came back thanks to the Monkey’s Paws. He was not meant to come back but he did, and from the the evidence, “There was another knock, and another.” and, “A perfect fusillade of knocks reverberated through the house..” it looks like he has problems . He has become something he’s not, he became a monster. He will not stop knocking, and basically started punching the door like a machine gun, something a normal person wouldn’t do--- this is horror to me, and I’m sure many other people would
