W.W. Jacobs uses foreshadowing and other literary techniques to create tones of mystery, tension, suspense, and surprise in each part of his work “The Monkey’s Paw”. The first example of mystery is presented in part one when the soldier says, “The first man had his three wishes, yes… I don’t know what the first two were, but the third was for death. That’s how I got the paw.” This leaves the reader questioning several points; why did the man before him wish for death?
In W.W. Jacobs’ story The Monkey's Paw, the author uses foreshadowing as a tool to create suspense. The first example of foreshadowing is when Sergeant Major Morris warns the whites about the consequences of using the monkey's paw. This happens after Sergeant Major Morris visits the whites and tells them the tale of the magical monkey’s paw. Mr. and Ms. White are unsure about the paw at first. The Sergeant then tries to burn the paw, but Mr. White stops him.
"The Monkey's Paw" is a story about a family who receives a talisman who gives it's owner three wishes. In return, it comes with very grave consequences that ruins the White family forever. In the short film "The Simpsons Treehouse of Horror", it's halloween, and the kids are eating all of their halloween candy. Their mother tells them they'll get nightmares, but everyone laughs and goes to bed, unsuspecting of the dream they would have. In the dream, they travel to a far away place, and they buy a paw from a merchant.
