In Chapter 1 of Triumph Of The City Edward Glaeser gives vivd examples of why cities are of so much importance. He starts off by showing the importance of being in close proximity giving examples of Athens saying “Ideas move from person to person within dense urban spaces, and this exchange occasionally creates miracles of human creativity” (38) . He goes on to speak of the sustainability of cities giving an example of the success of the barbarians being able to capture Rome however not having the knowledge of up keeping ultimately leading to what he states as “knowledge itself moved backward” (30). The fall of Rome was mainly because of plagues wiping out most of the population. The fall of the Han dynasty began from decentralized rule. However, outside invasions had an effect on the fall of both classical civilizations. Series of plagues began to hit the Rome Empire by the 2nd century. These plagues lowered the population drastically.
In the United States our government is broken up into many different parts. The biggest is of course the national government. The national government is comprised of the Executive branch, Legislative branch, and Judicial branch. These three compartments of government work together to approve the laws, make the laws, and enforce the law. After that power is trickled down to the state and local government.
Many people fantasize about time travel and what they would do if they could tread backward or forward in time. If I won the grand prize of the time-travel journey, I would go back to around 750 B.C.E. Rome, the time of its founding, until time forbids me to continue. I would chose Rome because it has such a rich culture and brilliant architecture. The first thing I would like to do is, record the creation of Rome because the formation is still not fully understood by archaeologists. Secondly, I would like to observe the construction of architecture of the city in progress.

Edinburgh is full of stone stairs and narrow streets. Charleston has piers and beaches. London is ornate buildings and bridges. However, New York City cannot be summed up the same way. To me, the many different parts of New York City feel like completely separate areas, separate cities.

In studies where participants have kept detailed, daily dream journals, women report an average of two nightmares a month, while men report an average of one and a half per month. In addition, women seem to have many more dreams that have nightmarish elements and themes but are not quite terrifying enough to be true nightmares. Why do women have more scary dreams than men?
Florence felt that it had superiority over other Italian cities, and had the strong desire to express this through the use of arts. Florentine patrons wanted the best artists and sculptures to beautify their city so that it would appear to be the most prominent of the principalities in Italy. However, there was not just a rivalry between Florence and the various city states of Italy. There was also a rivalry amongst the different guilds that dominated Florence. In the 1400s, Florence was controlled by seven main guilds, “each of which has a particular social standing and political outlook”.
All my life I have been on the move from one city to another living no more than three years in each. And each brought me unique experiences, that when people ask “well which do you like best?” I could not possibly decide, as you cannot compare a city with one another for each was during a different time in my life and in different circumstances. The one thing they have in common- Quito, Rio de Janeiro, Panama City, Sydney, New York and Buenos Aires- is the presence of the international communities.
Long before I came to Florence, Italy, I used to dream about visiting Milan. My reasons for wanting to come to Italy were not simply about Milan being one of the major fashion cities of the world; I wanted to study in Italy because it is the birthplace of so many high-end fashion brands. At the time, however, I knew very little about Florence. But after I arrived in Florence, I realized that I still had much to learn, and felt inspired at being confronted with so many things that I had not imagined or seen before.
