March 17, 2023 Dear Readers, Fear. Fear is defined as being afraid of someone or something that is likely to be dangerous, painful or threatening. Should you fear your family? Should you fear your own brother?
“The only thing to fear is fear itself.” (Franklin D. Roosevelt). Fear is a commonly confused emotion. Everyone’s response to fear varies. People may pass off fear as other things such as stress, anxiety, and in some cases laughter.

Many people use fear to control others. For example, bosses at work use fear to control their employees to get work done or they may get fired. Similarly, teachers use fear to control their students to behave and work, and if they do not, they get in trouble. Furthermore, coaches use fear as well, to control their teams to have them practice harder or they get punished by running laps. Parents also use fear to control their kids to behave properly or they get grounded.
Conquering fear also has the effect on people. They do not want to live in fear. They do not want to feel like there is something key to themselves which can overpower them at any second and turn them into something which is completely out of their control. It overwhelms them, making them do things which they would never do, whether that be jump off a cliff into a river to save their lives. Fear is a wild thing inside of all of us which is untamed.
Fear is perhaps the strongest force within humans- something that is an undeniable influence on our decision making process, whether those decisions may be major or minor. Fear comes into play both consciously and subconsciously; both practically and non practically; it is not always 100% apparent but it is the drive behind so much more of our thought process than we actually realize. This is not only human nature but the nature of animals, too. It is a force we cannot escape, whether is comes in reflexes or is something we avidly dwell on, so we’ve instead explored and embraced the wonders of this thing called fear.
The Fear of Reality Fear dominates various aspects of life. It can elicit physiological and emotional responses that greatly influence an individual’s reaction. For example, fear can cause an individual to experience an adrenaline rush that gives someone an extra burst of energy to lift a car or quickly flee from a situation. Fear can also cripple an individual by producing intense feelings of anxiety and nervousness.
Humans are born to be afraid. A feeling of fear is only natural for humans to feel; it is a part of who we are. However, it can be more than just a feeling. Fear can be a weakness in humans even though it is only our natural instinct for survival. Sometimes, fear is so powerful that it can blur our rationality and dominate how we think and what we do.
Dr. Nichols (2010) writes; “Many fears are positive and productive because they prod [one] to do something about fearful situations” (p. 23). “Fear is a healthy, natural response that can turn unhealthy and manipulative” (Nichols, 2010, p. 70). The concept of action should be one of encouragement because fear can cause anxiety, anger, and depression. Anxiety “wastes mental, physical, and spiritual energy” (Nichols, 2010, p. 54), and anger is a “dangerous emotion that becomes a distraction from the main problem” (Nichols, 2010, p. 57). The Prevalence of Fear Fear is something that has always existed since the beginning of time. In ancient times the notion of fear allowed humans to survive and not be killed by predators. While in modern times, the fear of the unknown has restricted creative learning and progress. Fear is a double edged sword and fear is something that is still affecting the daily lives of countless people to this day.
Fear is not always a harmful emotion. Through fear, we have learned life-long lessons that not everything will work in our favor. We have grown around the definition that fear is “an unpleasant emotion caused by the belief that someone or something is dangerous, likely to cause pain or be a threat” but never that the emotion is a natural and a helpful response. The Crucible, Farewell to Manzanar, and a George Takei interview all provide examples of how fear can be both harmful and beneficial.
Fear can be defined as an unpleasant feeling triggered by a situation. It is an emotion encountered by every human being. However, the reactions of people to fear may vary. Indeed, it ranges from the loss of rationality to the capacity of adaptation in extreme conditions. Thus, fear can be perceived as a weapon to control and manipulate society.
The book “Planet of the Slums” by Mike Davis is a huge eye opener that explains the harsh realities of slums. This books explores conditions of slums, how and suggested reasons as to why slums come about in cities, and how they are increasing due to different government or sometimes lack of government acts. Davis paints this picture and sells the ideas providing evidence and statistics form a lot of different countries and cities that have, and continue these harsh realities. Though he uses a lot of different examples of countries to where it can be confusing to keep track of where you’re reading about, it kind of proves a point itself that there are so many places in this world where these problems are being faced, it is hard to realize and wrap your head around this toughness.
As I said before fear is a horrible feeling and most would do anything to avoid or get rid of the emotion. Let’s say you were faced with a situation where you were accused of doing something and the penalty was death. The only way to get out of the gruesome penalty
