During the time of 1933-1945 the Nazi’s implemented a series of dehumanizing actions towards the jewish. In the book “Night” by Eliezer Wiesel, Wiesel discusses his life before being deported to a concentration camp, his experience in concentrations camps, and how he was finally liberated. Through Wiesel, we are able to witness the way these unfortunate jewish people were stripped of their rights, experimented on and objectified. First of all, there were many laws that were being established that were specifically targeting the Jewish population as time was progressing in Nazi Germany. These laws made a huge impact and made it more difficult for the jewish community to live as “normal” human beings.
It’s difficult to imagine the way humans brutally humiliate other humans based on their faith, looks, or mentality but somehow it happens. On the novel “Night” by Elie Wiesel, he gives the reader a tour of World War Two through his own eyes , from the start of the ghettos all the way through the liberation of the prisoners of the concentration camps. This book has several themes that develop throughout its pages. There are three themes that outstand from all the rest, these themes are brutality, humiliation, and faith. By looking at the theme of Struggle to Maintain Faith in the memoir Night, one can see that author Elie Wiesel used ‘Night’ and ‘Eyes’ as motifs to demonstrate the difficulty of religion and hope in grueling times, which is important because many people often struggle with their religion. In Night one of the ways that the Jews were dehumanized was by abuse. There were beatings, “I never felt anything except the lashes of the whip... Only the first really hurt.” (Wiesel, 57) “They were forced to dig huge trenches. When they had finished their work, the men from the Gestapo began theirs.
After going through so much, many people do not have the same mindset as they did before. Being tortured and watching others being tortured changes a person’s life, especially Elie’s, his father’s, Moshe the Beadle’s, and Rabbi Eliahou’s. Historians have been debating how the spirit triumphed during the Holocaust for years. The spirit triumphed through the Holocaust through many, many distractions, nature, and the support and love of family and friends. The Nazis had killed, and enslaved so many Jewish people in concentration camps. But, the Nazis couldn’t take their spirit from them.
With such dreadful conditions, the Jews began initiating resistance and uprisings. Even though the prisoners knew loss was unquestionable, they fought bravely and certain. The Jews wanted the future generation to know that they would never give up without a fight. The Nazi officers kept watch of the prisoners every second; the inhumanity of the guards murdered the spirit of the Jews. Because of the environment of the camps, a countless number of Jews died every day.
The “Spiritual Resistors” did simple things such as maintaining their regular day to day schedule that they would’ve maintained outside the Ghetto. Some “Spiritual Resistors” simply still followed their own religious beliefs although they were specifically instructed NOT to do so. Although there is a distinct lack of significant spiritually resistant cases, this was by far the most peaceful form of resistance, and relatively unparalleled by other forms of resistance amongst Jews. The Holocaust was an immoral machination orchestrated by the Nazi’s to eliminate any person who did not meet their criteria of a human. Millions were interned in camps all around Europe. Each person who survived the Holocaust has a different story. Within Elie Wiesel’s Night (2006) and the movie “Life is Beautiful” (2000) two different perspectives on the Holocaust are presented to audiences both however deal with the analogous subjects faced by prisoners.
