In the poem, "Heart to Heart" by Rita Dove, the word heart never appears in the poem. Although this is the case, there are a lot of instances where a heart is described. In the poem when the author refers the to something, it's evident that the author is talking about a heart. How can we know what they are talking about? Well, just look at the phrases they say. The first example is, "It doesn't have a top to spin on."(line 11). When we hear the word heart or see one, we often think of an image with two humps on the top that connect at the bottom. It's embedded in our heads that this is what a heart looks like and we don't ever make an effort to change the way this is described. Not exactly what we think at all. Secondly, the poem says, "It's neither red nor sweet."(lines 1,2) In most occurrences, also, when we think of a heart we think of the color red or pink. Or how a heart resembles love and passion. A heart is red and sweet. It's also most times a symbol most known used in the holiday Valentine's Day. Where we express feelings about a close partner. In reality, this is a false thought. Hearts are not sweet nor the color we imagine. In these lines, the author of the poem is stating that the way we imagine hearts is not at all how they are, but instead, ill-favored. Lastly, the poem hints at the recurring heart theme by saying, "I 't wear it on my sleeve..."(Lines 24,25) There are points in your life when you show emotion or are visibly upset about something. This is called wearing your heart on your sleeve. It's a figurative language term that states that the people around you can see that you are upset. But, you can't see the heart you can just sense it's there, figuratively speaking. In real life, you can't wear your heart on parts of your body. A heart can tell someone how you feel. So in reality, it's just something that is needed to get your body
