Our main goal is to keep all our patients safe. I agree with you, we use restraints on our patients to keep them safe and protect them from further injury. As much as possible, I would rather not use restraints in elderly. I have seen elderly patients get more agitated and caused more harm, especially when the patient is confused and unable to understand why restraints are being used. Ziglar (2015), a study was done in an acute care setting showing that the use of restraints in elderly can result in fall injuries, deconditioning, skin breakdown, incontinence, constipation, emotional distress, and even death.
