The whole month of October is filled with anticipation and excitement for many children because of Halloween. Many of these children don’t know that kids their own age or even younger are forced to work at cocoa farms, just so they can enjoy their Halloween chocolate. The minicase: Is Your Chocolate the Result of Unfair Exploitation of Child Labor?, briefly describes the dilemma between international trade and child labor laws. Questions like, should labor practices in another country be a relevant consideration in international trade? What options are available to governments, business and consumers when it comes child labor? How would international trade theorists view the Fairtrade movement? International trade is monitored by the World Trade Organization (WTO), there are regulations and expectations that every member of the WTO upholds. Child labor laws should be enforced in all countries that are members of the WTO. A country that is caught selling items that were produced by children, they should be banned from the WTO and countries that are part of the WTO should be banned from trading with countries that allow child labor. There are many options that business, countries and consumers have when it comes to child labor. Countries can prohibit any trade with countries that turn a blind eye to child labor, preventing trade would drastically hurt the countries that allow child labor, and force them to reconsider forcing children to work. Businesses could reconsider where they get their supplies or products from, if that company is known to use child labor, businesses should look elsewhere for their items. Consumers can do the same when it comes down to buying products produced by child labor.
