I was not aware of the considerable extent of clergy who are faced with the cloud of shame and secrecy surrounding the issue of pornography addiction. In the book,
“Professional Ethics,” Joyce Ann Mercer writes, “Using pornography necessary involves a minister in a secretive effort to address his or her needs in an unhealthy way” (Professional Sexual Ethics, pg. 201). Reverend Miller, in the outlined case, has obviously been struggling with this addiction for years and never could find the courage to seek help. That is until after having a conversation with his longtime colleague and trusted friend. I personally think this is a clear indication that he is in search of support and encouragement. Moreover, Joyce Ann Mercer also pens, “The minister is the one who is responsible for maintaining appropriate boundaries and upholding integrity in their ministerial roles” (Professional Sexual Ethics, pg. 195). Hence, I believe what has hindered Reverend Miller from coming forth is his role as respected spiritual leader who is expected to embody the highest moral standards to whom others look for guidance and counsel. It is up to Reverend Miller to want to break free from this sinister behavior and attitude. And I feel that counseling will help him navigate these waters. Essentially, I would assume that pride is what has stopped him from getting the help he needs. Reverend Miller must realize that he can only begin to heal and be delivered when he swallows his pride, and truly repents to change his attitude and behavior. As he seeks deliverance, he must know that repentance will provide freedom for him to break the addiction, cleanse his soul, and guarantee holiness unto God. He also should be mindful, that he is in the middle of a spiritual battle. The main factor in battling his pornography addiction is to come under the authority of Jesus
