Reverend Parris is a middle aged man, who we first meet in The Crucible by Arthur Miller, around his late 30’s or mid 40’s. He has a high status. He is the one of the town pastors. Parris has a ill daughter, Betty Parris. Who he discovered dancing in the forest with his teenage niece, Abigail Williams. However, he seemly worries about his town reputation, not his young Betty, clearly in some form of coma. Multiple visitors come to his home and tell him there’s rumors of wtchcraft afoot, that Tituba, Abigail and Betty were out in the forest casting spells. He goes to Abigail, and begs her to tell him the truth of that night. After she denies him and recommends that he go deny the rumors of such manor. Furious at her denial, He, rather loudly, yells at the young teen, "And what shall I say to them? That my daughter and my niece I discovered dancing like heathen in the forest?" (170) Parris weeps over his unconscious young daughter, Betty, at the start of Act one. He’s furious at the world, and Screams loudly at Tituba to “Out with you!”. Just about everything that could go wrong, has gone wrong. Worries of Betty being “wiitched”, along with Abigail’s fighting with one Elizabeth Proctor, have put him at a breaking point. Throughout he seemly forget’s about the poor ill child as soon as “witchcraft” and “hangin error” comes into play. He debates the claims and even demands the ownership of his deed to his estate. His importance in the play is majorly huge, He hides the secrets of Abigail’s affair and use of witchcraft, and almost has Tituba, his elderly slave, hanged for the deed. He reminds me of a sidekick, or a helping character, as he unwillingly help’s Abigail murder innocent people, such as Rebecca Nurse.
