Article Summary The article, “Social Studies: In Search of Justification,” by James Duplass navigates the discussion of the methods that are currently being used by teachers to teach and evaluate students in social studies curriculum. Classrooms are focused on high-stakes testing and data-driven assessments and are intended to produce “well-informed” and “civic-minded” adults. Also, Duplass uses this article to explain why he believes that social studies is a unique subject and why there should be alternate justification for the purpose of teaching social studies in the classroom. While math, science, and reading are subjects that have goals for their students to learn tools, rules, and methods that they will use in their future careers and everyday life, social studies is not centered around this. Social studies does not teach students specific tools and skills. We are taught how to use math, science and reading. Social studies teaches about different parts of humanity in an objective manner, but it is then up to the student how they will use that knowledge to either create wisdom or dissolution. Social studies is implemented to improve students’ capabilities to be better people for their own lives, but it is a gamble. We do not know how students will react or take in this knowledge, but we provide it in hopes they will use it to become better people. That they may be able to better themselves and others in all areas of social studies. In summary, I strongly agree with Duplass’ opinion on the unique nature of social
