Speeches are used to commemorate points of history, and inform the general public of the product of their history but what makes a speech so impacting on it’s audience? Rhetorical devices give speeches and works of literature a way that can convey feelings or ideas to a viewer. When addressing during times of war or chaos, people such as Ronald Reagan, Abraham Lincoln, and Winston Churchill used these terms to better connect with their audience. Without these tools of the english language, dialogue and literature would be all the more dull and unappealing. However, with these useful instruments, writers and speakers can better communicate through some of the many rhetorical devices.

Netflix (on-demand internet streaming media service), an innovative service that allows people to watch movies, TV shows and cartoons in your TV at home or in your smartphone while you are in a bus or train for example, can quickly answer this question with a no. Journal Response The chapter “A Rhetoric for Writing Teachers” by Erika Lindemann describes how people use rhetoric unconsciously on their daily lives through writing or speaking. The term rhetoric is explained as being influential; teachers in particular are described to make use of rhetoric means to encourage their students into learning. Nevertheless, the rhetoric term has been under discussion over the years. The initials connotations given to this term were on the negative side; Lindemann describes how thinkers from old times expressed that the term rhetorical was mostly inclined towards the usage of appealing language leaving the importance of the message itself aside.
The first section of your syllabus entitled “What We’re Doing in This Course, and Why” intrigued me. Specifically, due to its mention of the concept of rhetorical thinking being used to figure out what to say and how to say it. To me, this section encompasses all disciplines who tend to use different words to describe how you present an argument both in a correct and incorrect manner (framing, bias, logical fallacies ect.). I’m interested to see how different disciplines utilize this skill from simply being as bland and logical as possible such as in a scientific paper, or to making an effort to persuade an audience in a speech such as in a debate.
Politicians call for missile defense projects. Many defense projects have failed and cost not only the government but taxpayers over 50 billion dollars. Lee Fang, a writer for The Intercept, shows how ineffective these programs have been in the past. The persuasiveness of Lee's argument in his article “Politicians Use North Korea H-Bomb Fears to Pitch Wasteful Missile Defense Projects” is based on a logical approach using facts, (logos), an emotion approach trying to rally us up (pathos), and on his credibility and the creditability of his sources (ethos). Lee's appeal to our logical (logos) side is based on facts.
Past leaders such as Andrew Jackson, Adolf Hitler, Benito Mussolini, and Marc Antony are evidence that society does not reward morality and good character in leadership. Society is drawn to leaders that have good rhetoric, propaganda, and charismatic personalities, and society supports them despite their immorality. Society is concerned about stability more than the morality of their leaders and will support immoral leaders in times of crisis to provide stability. In history there have been multiple leaders that have used rhetoric, propaganda and charismatic personalities to gain power, despite their morals.
Middle School Get Me Out Of Here James Patterson Rafe adjusts to his new school by acknowledging the school’s art programs and classes and by causing a little trouble with Zeke and Kenny. For instance, after Mrs. Ling gave Rafe and the other students a tour around the art section of the school, Rafe thought that the new school was extraordinary and that “seventh grade was looking up, up, UP!” (Page 57, Patterson). In addition, after Zeke and Kenny made Rafe look like a total fool during the critique, Rafe and his new friend Matty threw rubber glove balloons filled with water at Zeke and Kenny as their revenge.

Creating ideas is the first step to persuasive arguments, also known as Rhetoric. However this is easier said than done. When creating ideas, these ideas must be intriguing, entertaining, and captivating; strong ideas that make the audience wake up instead of putting them asleep.
Kathryn Stockett successfully uses rhetorical devices to get the reader to feel and understand the perspectives of the protagonists. Stockett uses pathos, ethos, and logos in her book, since the book about social injustice. The topics in the book range from inequality of the sexes to social classes and racism, Stockett is successful in getting the reader to reflect while reading the book and the themes of the book have a clear presence. We see Stockett use ethos and pathos in the very first chapters when we learn that Hilly doesn't like Minny and Minny doesn't want to say why at first, but the incident with Ms. Holbrook was affecting her chances of getting a job because of the influence Hilly has over this suburban society. In some instances where Stockett uses ethos, pathos is also included in her writing.
There are many habits of mind that are important in thinking rhetorically. It all starts with listening. You need to listen in order to understand what is being said in a situation. If I do not hear what is being said then I will not be able to respond to the situation, and I might jump to conclusions without knowing the full story. Leading me to obtain the wrong information.
This advanced writing and communication prepared me undoubtably for my following courses and the real world. In this course, we learned about the basics of communicating and writing in all business atmospheres, where we were expected to refine our writing, research, and presentation knowledge. All the feedback provided by the instructor was constructive and provided us with a different point of view to our own work, allowing us to polish our work to the best of our abilities. Accomplishment of Goals Considering my initial goals for this course were to expand my writing skills, as it has never been my strongest suit I feel like I improved.
