Rhetoric can be found in anything, from the very same music you listen to in your car, to the Super Bowl advertisements you see each year. An example of an advertisement that uses rhetorical devices would be the 1955 advertisement for Camel Cigarettes. It was created during a time where smoking was practically a social norm and before the anti-smoking campaigns you see today were even brought into question. The ad depicts an actor with the classic 1950’s “blue collar” look who has his dog in one hand and a cheesy wide grin accompanied by a Camel cigarette in the other. Camel Cigarettes use rhetorical devices to argue that their cigarette trumps the competition in flavor and pleasure which will result in a better disposition.
My definition of rhetoric before the readings was simply: successful written or oral communication with a clear purpose & audience in mind. After completing the readings, I have decided that is not specific enough and does not encompass what rhetoric really is. The readings by Crusus, Channell, and Drucker helped establish a clear relationship between argument, “mature reasoning”, and communication as a mode used to communicate. Both of the readings provided a clearer understanding of argument and communication, key components to rhetoric, but did not change my definition until I read “The Rhetorical Situation” by Bitzer. The idea of a rhetorical situation, provided a clear application of the question: “What is rhetoric?”
Rhetoric is used in many different ways and in many different places. When using rhetoric a certain type of language is being used to persuade the audience to do something or believe in something. Martin Luther King uses many different types of rhetoric in “I have a dream” to persuade people to stand with him in fighting against discrimination of another race. Elie Wiesel uses rhetoric in “Keep Memory Alive” to persuade his audience to not be detached from the world and what is going on in it. King uses many rhetorical devices whereas Wiesel uses very few.
Rhetoric is used everywhere around the world. in the real world it is used by everyone sometimes to make examples. sometimes to prove a point. also there are times where rhetoric can help you persuade people. in the olden times Thomas Paine and Patrick Henry used rhetoric devices to help the situations they were in.
The rhetorical tradition is defined as the language that is being used to maintain social groups. It is the way that the speaker uses and manipulates language in order to persuade an audience. Rhetoric, in this context, is the skillful use of language and communication techniques to persuade, inform, entertain, or otherwise influence an audience. “They are tools for persuading others to a particular point of view and are often used in writing and advertising to sway the audience” (Park, 2022).
The definition of rhetoric states that it the process of effective persuasive writing, which Gladwell does professionally well through utilizing his image, emotional appeal and credible evidence. To display his image, he uses a descriptive and commanding tone to convey his information by using short bold sentences and rhetorical questions. “The question is this: is there such a thing as innate talent? The obvious answer is yes.” (Gladwell, 38)
Readers are only able to understand messages and information a writer provides through the effective use of rhetoric. Rhetoric is the basis of communication, and when used effectively, the communicator succeeds in sharing his ideas with others. A rhetor who creates connections with his reader can determine how to use rhetorical strategies to best convey ideas. By understanding the writer and reader connection and by using appropriate rhetorical strategies, the rhetor ably delivers effective and persuasive messages to his targeted audience. Rhetoric is important when communicating as it permits readers to receive ideas in a way that is both convincing and effective.
Based on the readings and videos that you read/watched during week one, how would you describe “rhetoric”? What is “the rhetorical situation” and how do you see an awareness of this concept affecting your writing and behaviors? The word “rhetoric” is considered as the art of using language effectively and persuasively in any form of communication. So, it is omnipresent in our life.
Rhetoric is the art of writing and skill speech for the audiences. Lawyers, governments, president, and even the car dealers use these speech skills to influence their listeners. Announcer use rhetoric to persuade and inspire people of their facts, status, and emotion. Ethos- (Status)

Her painting experience began after a tragic bus accident in which she suffered from harsh injuries. While recovering from the accident Frida started and finished her first self-portrait painting a year later, then gave it as a gift to her former partner Alejandro Gómez Arias.
In “Ten ways to think about writing: Metaphoric Musings for College Writing Students,” E. Shelley Reid states that when the audience changes, your message has to change too. Not all audiences are swayed by the same arguments, and even the same individuals must sometimes be argued with differently for different scenarios. A skilled writer could work an audience into frenzy just by pressing the right buttons and persuade the readers into agreeing with his or her position. Rhetoric is a way of speaking in a persuasive way to create an impact on the audience or have them think the same way as the speaker. The three main strategies of rhetoric speech is ethos, pathos, and logos. Ethos meaning the speaker is dwelling upon themselves, pathos meaning the speaker is using imagination to create emotion, and logos meaning facts and logic is used by the speaker to persuade the audience. Socrates used logos in a way that helped him exhibit an effective speech to prove which type of knowledge is worth knowing. In spite of this claim, Socrates was truly only showing the court that he really did not know much more than his name.
In the tale Gorgias by Plato, Socrates debates with four colleagues on what is rhetoric. To be able to answer if rhetoric is based on nature or convention you must first ask the question, what is rhetoric? Rhetoric stated by Socrates is the skill of making speeches (448d). Gorgias states that rhetoricians have the power of persuasions (452e). Rhetoric is having the power to persuade people in changing their opinion threw the power of speeches.
Based on my demographic profile I would expect myself to be liberal as I am a young black protestant female. The key factors that influenced my location on the spectrum are my race, gender, religion, geographic location and my age. Women tended to be liberal for they believe that they should be the one to have the authority to decide issues that consider their body. They tend to be prochoice they tend to support the humanity and pride of all pregnant people in deciding whether they carry a pregnancy to term, how they give birth, and whether they parent the child they give birth to . More so they are firm believers of equal pay and marriage equality, these are political ideologies that are liberal in nature.
