A beast ravages the earth; creeping leisurely, alerting no one of its presence. Some deny its existence, others plead for recognition. Climate change is that monster, which crawls throughout the worlds atmosphere; elongating drought, and even causing wildfires frequency to increase. During his administration, Barack Obama spoke to the United nations about the need to increase funds, and programs to lessen the effect of carbon emissions on the earth. Although his speech was a presentation of scientific facts, Obama employed several rhetorical devices such as; ethical appeals, anaphora, and allusion conveying the gravity and urgency of slowing climate change around the world. As for the United States’ present ventures in environmental protection of carbon emissions, Obama utilizes anaphora in the section that reads, “We’re partnering…We’re helping…We’re building…”, to indicate unity among the current climate change programs (15). By means of a collective noun and three present ‘-ing’ verbs, Obama conveys the cohesion and immediacy of the reliefs efforts already at work. The excerpt encourages a developing idea that joining together creates more effective aid that assembles a better future. While mentioning the present attempts to soften the blow of carbon emissions upon the earth, Obama also addresses the future of climate change while applying anaphora. When talking about the lack of deniability of climate change, Obama states that the future, “It must be ambitious…It must be inclusive…It must be flexible…” (22). To emphasize the urgency by means of the word ‘must’, Obama creates a not to call to action, but specifically a call of aspiration, unity, and compromise.
