In Jack’s informative speech, he talked about Mardi Gras and explained to the audience what it is. He effectively achieved his goal by informing the audience about it and keeping them entertained. In this paper, I will go over his strengths, weaknesses, and how to improve his speech for next time. After critically going over his speech, he will know for next time what to keep doing and what to improve on. One of Jack’s strengths in the speech is starting off speeches by using humor. Starting off, he humored his audience which hooked them into the rest of the speech. Using humor is one of the techniques used in order to keep people interested in what you have to stay. Next, he organized his speech well. He started off by stating his three main points and throughout the speech, explained each of them and how it relates to Mardi Gras today. In the introduction and the conclusion, he again states his three main ideas about how Mardi Gras brings in tourists, the excitement of the parades, and traditions in the festival. First, he needs to establish credibility. Establishing credibility informs the audience that the speaker knows what they are talking about and it enables them the ability to trust them. Without that, the audience could believe that the speaker is making the speech up. Also, he needs to state why he is interested in the topic. He needs to state how he got the idea to do a speech on Mardi Gras and what sparked his interest. If the audience believes he doesn’t enjoy it, then they won’t bother to listen. Lastly, Jack needs to add a bit more voice variety in the speech. Throughout the speech, it was the same tone and I feel like it could make the speech more interesting with a different voice variety.
