“Astonishing and extraordinary! You have to read this book. It will mesmerize you, confound you, and eventually inspire you!” Which was stated by a best selling author, Jack Canfield. In the nonfiction book, Scared Selfless, by Michelle Stevens she develops her theme, that not only does one need to know about the abuse and trauma that individuals go through but how to seek recovery. Yet, also to inspire more women and men to step out the shadows and expose the evil to the world to light the truth. Stevens was able to prevail through this and then further had the courage to take the time to tell the world what it needs to know about child victimization. For instance, “ a miracle? Yes. Absolutely. A miracle of the human mind. Once again, in the face of grave danger, my psyche used dissociation to help me survive. This time, of course, the “danger” came from within; I had nearly killed myself. So my mind and what it wont to do (Stevens 166).” This was significantly used to subtly influence the audience in order to get an effect. To be more informed of the consequences and outcomes that Stevens had gone through from the abuse as a child. As much as I recoiled at the details-as much as it hurt to read what was done to the author Stevens, as a young, innocent girl, I felt profoundly inspired by her l courage and ability to shine a light on what few have survived… and what few have survived physiologically intact enough to later then discuss and address the conflicted situation. With this last quote from the memoir Scared Selfless it was the last bit of the book, she used a rhetorical question as her final sentence. Demonstrating and showing us that she is finally at a place in her life where she is genuinely happy and okay. “Don’t get me wrong, my life isn’t perfect. Not by a long shot. I still experience down days and jags a anxiety. I still have periods of stress and self-doubt. But nowadays, these feelings are bearable and normal. I have a normal life.
