“Social media is now anti-social” is an article from the Cedar Rapids Gazette written by Nicholas Johnson. Social media’s function is to lure a person into spending more time on it. It has so much power because of the vast range of influence it has on people. It also has more influence than any other social invention in history. He fails at using logic because he does not focus on the main topic and he has many parts that do not add value to the argument. Johnson uses an assortment of different facts, statistics, and quotes. But, he does not use these logical details in the right way. He does not succeed in focusing his logic into a specific thesis. If a person may think his thesis could have been arguing that social media has a large influence, just then he might have succeeded. Nevertheless, he is not arguing about the effect of social media on people, so he remains unsuccessful. Many of his quotes, facts, and statistics seem random at times and are not necessary for the cause. For example, Johnson states, “No radio or television station or network with an audience of thousands, or even low millions, can come close to the power of social media”(Johnson). This is a very powerful statement, but it is used in the wrong way. It does not add any value to his writing because his topic is not about the influence social media holds. Overall, the statement was not useful or needed in the article. Most of the article is talking about how much social media has changed over time and how it has so much influence, even though it is supposed to be about how social media has become anti-social. He stated a few negative effects of social media, but otherwise he didn't talk much about how social media is actually anti-social.
