Rebecca Watson, the speaker, made it clear her purpose was to inform you that while Martin Shkrelli had a huge role in the raising of Daraphim prices, he was not the only one to blame. She blames the entire pharmaceutical community for making it harder for people to access the medicine they need by constantly changing the prices. Watson builds upon her purpose by pulling out more opinions such as: “Homeopathy is bullshit and many chiropractors are dangerous quacks (Watson).” These opinions allows the reader to fully believe she is dislikes and puts blame on the pharmaceutical industry and the people within it. She specifically points out chiropractors which indicates there might have been an issue with one previously that allowed her to draw this conclusion.

Florence Kelly was a United States social worker who advocated for child labor laws and the improved working conditions for women throughout the early 1900s. In 1832, a young African American woman, Maria W. Stewart, rose to address a Boston audience. In her lecture, Stewart uses her intellect and passion to call for equal rights for African American citizens. Her lecture employs brilliant rhetorical strategies to support her position. Stewart is successful in her passionately expressive calling for an end to African American discrimination through her use of diction and figurative language.
The speech from 1905 given to the Philadelphia convention of the National American Women’s Suffrage association by Florence Kelley highlights the issue of child labor in poor working conditions that had to be changed. Kelley manipulates her sentences into a large variety of fluid syntax structures and displays a prolific use of shifting between quantitative evidence and short anecdotes along with sporadic yet organized placements of repetition; in using these devices, she persuades her audience to act on stopping these abhorrent roles placed onto young children. First, Kelley’s syntax structures are diverse and switch between conforming and nonconforming grammar in a relatively pleasant manner. In paragraph 2 from the sentence starting in line 10, she has constructed a long sentence with two independant clauses glued by a semicolon: first, a clause including a medium lengthed list stating examples of people in certain groups that “increase in the ranks of the breadwinners;” then, an emphasizing clause that begins with the conjunction “but.”
Clare Boothe, as seen through the essay, uses many techniques to grab the audience's attention straight off the bat. On July 22, 1905, Florence Kelley, a supporter of child labor laws and improved conditions for working women, delivered a powerful speech before the convention of the National American Woman Suffrage Association in Philadelphia. Through uses of rhetoric strategies, such as, evidence, diction, and imagery, Kelley illustrates her argument that working conditions and laws must be changed. Kelley begins her speech by presenting a list of statistics. As many as “two million children under the age of sixteen years” earn their bread (lines 1-2). No other group of workers increased as rapidly as young girls from fourteen to twenty (lines 8-10).
Speeches are used to commemorate points of history, and inform the general public of the product of their history but what makes a speech so impacting on it’s audience? Rhetorical devices give speeches and works of literature a way that can convey feelings or ideas to a viewer. When addressing during times of war or chaos, people such as Ronald Reagan, Abraham Lincoln, and Winston Churchill used these terms to better connect with their audience. Without these tools of the english language, dialogue and literature would be all the more dull and unappealing. However, with these useful instruments, writers and speakers can better communicate through some of the many rhetorical devices.
Finding the fact that children from the age of “twelve to twenty years” are subject to labor heartbreaking. Florence Kelley’s speech, given at the National American Woman Suffrage Association, uses a variety of rhetorical strategies to turn the hearts of the audience against child labor, along with strengthening the argument for women’s suffrage. She does this to ultimately to argue that when women can vote, they will put a stop to child labor. While other rhetorical strategies, such as logos and ethos, serve mainly to impress the audience’s reason.

Here, Rich conveys how the student must demand appreciation from others in order to develop academically. The United States is made up of some of the most diverse and interesting cultures in the world. Jamila Lyiscott proves this by showing her different dialects and how they are all equally important. Lyiscott believes that the way she speaks towards her parents, towards her friends, and towards her colleagues are all one in the same. Throughout the entirety of her speech, Lyiscott changes up her vocal patterns and dialects so that the audience can understand first hand what each of these dialects are. When she talks about her father, Lyiscott uses her native tongue, when she talks to her fellow neighbors and close friends she switches it up to a more urbanized dialect, and when she is in school she masks the other two dialects with a professional sounding language.
Not everyone reads, but those who do understand the value the hold. American Educator, William Lyon Phelps, asserts in his speech that books give wisdom and knowledge to those who take the time to read. He first supports this claim by first using analogy and parallelism, then amplification, then diction, and finally pathos. Phelps purpose is to inform the Nazi German people and German students that books have a value in this world. To begin with, Phelps begins his speech about books by appealing to pathos by using analogy and parallelism.
