This document is a primary source, specifically public speech. The speech was delivered on January 29, 2002. The U.S. is in the middle of the deadliest terrorist attacks in American history to occur on American soil. The attack occurred on September 11, 2001. The airborne terrorist assaults on the Pentagon, the World Trade Center, and the nearly 3,000 American lives lost in the attempted flight against the White House or Capitol. Bush used the speech as a reference to Iran, Iraq, and North Korea as the "axis of evil" for the first time. The speech was mostly focused on foreign policy. President Bush unveiled a comprehensive strategy to track out and neutralize terrorists worldwide following the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks on the United States. The term "Global War on Terror," or "GWOT," was used to refer to the conflicts in Afghanistan and Iraq as well as additional military, diplomatic, and other measures used to prevent terrorists from receiving funding or safe haven.
