It was extreme, abrupt, and forever changed the lives of the men. They will never again be able to fit in back home because of the horrific events they went through. Paul believes that, “even if these scenes of our youth were given back to us we would hardly know what to do.”

Speeches are used to commemorate points of history, and inform the general public of the product of their history but what makes a speech so impacting on it’s audience? Rhetorical devices give speeches and works of literature a way that can convey feelings or ideas to a viewer. When addressing during times of war or chaos, people such as Ronald Reagan, Abraham Lincoln, and Winston Churchill used these terms to better connect with their audience. Without these tools of the english language, dialogue and literature would be all the more dull and unappealing. Johnnie Cochran's closing argument during the O.J Simpson uses all three rhetorical appeals to try and convince the jury of O.J Simpson's innocence. To begin with, he uses Ethos by bring up a quote by Frederick Douglas that discusses the equality of all men and implying that if they vote O.J Simpson guilty it would be unethical because of his race. Next he appeals to pathos by using the statement "We haven't reached this goal yet, but certainly in this great county of ours, we're trying" to give a sense of both disappointment and pride first by showing that we haven't overcome discrimination yet but then that we still live in a great place that is striving.
Though the supreme court ruled in favor of the Majority Opinion, Chief Justice Roberts created a very effective argument by molding his logos carefully and taking a more objective stance in comparison to his counterpart, Justice Scalia. Roberts begins his dissent by asserting what the true exigency at hand actually is. For his audience to properly interpret his argument, it is crucial for him to differentiate the court’s responsibility from the claims of what it may be. Roberts denies that the court has any place to be deciding whether or not true at this moment in time. He states, “Such a conclusion involves no judgement on whether global warming exists, what causes it, or the extent of the problem.”
In Just Mercy Stevenson makes the argument that hope is essential for people to maintain. He does this by structuring his writing in a specific way and making emotional appeals, ultimately convincing his audience of his argument. Firstly, Stevenson structures his writing so when he makes his argument it has the most impact possible. He will delve into a disheartening topic then make his argument of hope after.
Peace Over Animosity Martin Luther King Jr., widely regarded as one of the most impactful and influential peaceful protestors of all time, carries many characteristics that categorize him as a leader. In the 1950’s and 1960’s, King traveled across the country in his search for constitutional freedom and recognition for African Americans. King’s protests started in 1955 during the bus boycotts in Montgomery, Alabama, and ended in 1968 after King was assassinated by James Earl Ray. In his famous prison note, “Letter From a Birmingham Jail,” King emphasizes and creates arguments based on certain injustices that have victimized him and his people, prior to, and after, catapulting him into this leadership position. In Michael Levin's The Case for Torture, Levin provides an argument in which he discusses the significance of inflicting torture to perpetrators as a way of punishment. In his argument, he dispenses a critical approach into what he believes justifies torture in certain situations. Torture is assumed to be banned in our culture and the thought of it takes society back to the brutal ages. He argues that societies that are enlightened reject torture and the authoritative figure that engage in its application risk the displeasure of the United States. In his perspective, he provides instances in which wrongdoers put the lives of innocent people at risk and discusses the aspect of death and idealism.
Mark Twain, an 18th century humorist, was known for his critical and satirical writing. In one of his most famous essays, “ Fenimore Coopers Literary Offenses” Twain addresses Coopers inability to realistically develop a “situation” and his failure to effectively back up his stories in order for them to be more plausible. To dramatically convey his unimpressed and sarcastic attitude, he applies biting diction, metaphors and hypophora throughout this work . By continuously using biting diction, Twain develops a mocking tone towards Fenimore Cooper’s incapability to create even the simplest of storylines. In the title of the work a sarcastic tone is evident; the word choice is utilized to reinforce the argument stating how Coopers work is an offense to the world of literature.

Goodman builds an argument to persuade his audience that news organizations should increase the amount of professional foreign news coverage by giving solutions to the problem he claims that news stations currently has.
