Rhetorical Appeals in the Wounded Warrior Project Advertisements The Wounded Warrior Project recruits the aid of the American public to honor and assist injured veterans of the United States armed forces. Through financial aid, the non-profit organization provides programs for the physical and mental injuries of soldiers with little or no cost to the warriors. The organization also offers support services for the warrior’s family (www.woundedwarriorproject.org). Through advertisements, the Wounded Warrior Project hopes to gain the public’s aid to finance the organization’s programs.
War reporter Ernie Pyle in a eulogy about the aftermath of D-day titled "The Horrible Waste of War" (1944) explains and details the events of D-Day before the beach is cleaned up. In order to communicate the scene before him, Pyle uses a cataloging of images, irony, and imagery. Pyle seeks to write a lasting remembrance of the sacrifice of the soldiers on that beach. In remembering the soldiers, Pyle is cognizant of the interest his audience will have, an audience of Americans, family member, friends, and loved ones. Pyle uses symbolism and repetition to organize his article.
Today, after going through the information revolution, the United States are planning or framing up ‘New World Order’ that is based on the three points that one is the military power which centered nuclear weapons in it, and second is holding dollars as a key currency, and also third is the occupation of English language as a computer language and common words. E.W. Said just commented about this point in his book ‘Culture and imperialism’ that after the Cold War it seems that in the ‘New World Order’ suggested by the United States government, with self-admiration, a victory declaration for show and a sense of responsibility exaggerated, most of rhetoric were preoccupied by a person’s words of Conrad described.
The most difficult thing an author can do when telling a story, is attracting an audience, and maintaining the audience’s engagement. In Serial, while telling the story of Adnan Syed, Sarah Koenigs attracts the audience with her purpose which is proving that Adnan Syed was wrongfully convicted and isn't completely guilty. Sarah maintains the attention of her audience by using emotional, and logical appeal, while also establishing credibility. In other words she uses the rhetoric made up of Pathos, Logos, and Ethos.
In 2002, then Senator Barack Obama addressed fellow anti-war rallyist by using scesis onomaton to emphasis his views on why invading Iraq is unreasonable. He signifies that this war is an unrealistic decision by saying that “a dumb...rash war” would only cause more tension between nations. Obviously, he was not anticipating a clear answer because he knew that President Bush would not be able to defend his argument on why the American people should fight against Iraq. Obama brings attention to his audience by repeating similar words like “dumb” and “rash” in order to get his point across of how unnecessary this war will be. He establishes that he “does not oppose all wars”, but he does oppose those which add more fuel to the fire.
After reading this excerpt, “Did My Car Join Al Qaeda” by Woody Hochswender, I believe that while some of his points were not a proficient as others, he was persuasive. The majority of his essay appealed to the logos, targeting the intellect of the reader and using reason to defend his thesis. In response to “the Virtuous Ones” (154) for example, they claim that “America’s fuel consumption is responsible for enmity towards us in the Middle East” (154). Hochswender appeals to the logos through reasoning. For many people, specifically those in geographically demanding locations, demanding SUVs are not simply a shallow display of social status and wealth.
In his “9/11 Address to the Nation” the 43rd President of the United States of America, George W. Bush assures that America will not be affected by the unruly and evil attacks carried out on September 11th, 2001. The President drafted this speech to resist the impending fear and questioning that American citizens around the country would soon be consumed by. Because 9/11 was the most impactful, yet devastating terrorist attack on the United States to date, Bush was not able to derive his thoughts from others’ ideas and speeches, thus he was forced to dig deep and extract the emotions and thoughts aroused by the “despicable acts.” Much like any great leader, President Bush wanted to stress the importance of instilling a sense of pride and resilience in the country and fellow countrymen and women to come together and remain as one. As the head of the “brightest beacon of freedom and opportunity” President George W. Bush declares that the United States of America will “remain strong” and appear unaffected as the country continues to build and rebound from the senseless acts of terrorism and hate.
“Honey, you are changing that boy’s life.” A friend of Leigh Anne’s exclaimed. Leigh Anne grinned and said, “No, he’s changing mine.” This exchange of words comes from the film trailer of an award-winning film, The Blind Side, directed by John Lee Hancock, released on November 20th, 2009. This film puts emphasis on a homeless, black teen, Michael Oher, who has had no stability or support in his life thus far.
Rhetorical Analysis Essay President G.W. Bush, in his 9/11 address, comforts the American people after the terrorist attacks. His main purpose was to console the people of America, but he also wanted to bring fear into the terrorists eyes. His audience was not only the U.S. citizens, but also the world including the perpetrators. Bush used ethos and pathos very heavily throughout his speech. He did not need much logos and his not using it did not weaken his message.
The Oklahoma City bombing was a domestic terrorist truck bombing of the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building in downtown Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, in the United States on April 19, 1995. To comfort the American people and show the families of the people who died that the American people are mourning with them, former President Bill Clinton issued a memorial address. I believe this was necessary and his speech was effective on the grounds that President Clinton was able to create an emotional connection with his audience by ensuring a sense of comfort and giving advice to the many Americans who were astonished by this act of terrorism. Creating an emotional connection with a certain group of people after a traumatic experience is important.
In Michael Levin's The Case for Torture, Levin provides an argument in which he discusses the significance of inflicting torture to perpetrators as a way of punishment. In his argument, he dispenses a critical approach into what he believes justifies torture in certain situations. Torture is assumed to be banned in our culture and the thought of it takes society back to the brutal ages. He argues that societies that are enlightened reject torture and the authoritative figure that engage in its application risk the displeasure of the United States. In his perspective, he provides instances in which wrongdoers put the lives of innocent people at risk and discusses the aspect of death and idealism.
Past leaders such as Andrew Jackson, Adolf Hitler, Benito Mussolini, and Marc Antony are evidence that society does not reward morality and good character in leadership. Society is drawn to leaders that have good rhetoric, propaganda, and charismatic personalities, and society supports them despite their immorality. Society is concerned about stability more than the morality of their leaders and will support immoral leaders in times of crisis to provide stability. In history there have been multiple leaders that have used rhetoric, propaganda and charismatic personalities to gain power, despite their morals.
In a desperate attempt for peace, as ironic as it may be, we create chaos, resulting in the death of millions at a time. Firearms burn bright in the dim sun, exposing the vibrancy of blood-stained suits. As the bullets penetrate skin, the life of another innocent individual has already been lost. Families never to hear a last, “I love you” before their loved one tragically passes in a loud, chaotic mess. They run towards the danger, knowing exactly what result the soldiers might have gotten in the gamble of life or death.
Activity theory, as interpreted by Ph.D. candidates, Wardle and Kain, is a process that attempts to see all aspects of activity such as social interactions and use of writing and language to achieve goals. This theory is award winning. Activity theory states that for a system to be effective, the rules, community, subject, division of labor, and motives must be reasonable. These components are shown through the chosen tool of communication most often. When one area of the system is corrupted, the tool will no longer function correctly in order to communicate or achieve its goals.
Prometheus, a titan who brought fire to man, is alluded to hundreds of years later through Frankenstein, a scientist who brought a corpse back to life. With Prometheus being explored in the works of Hesiod and Aeschylus, and Frankenstein illustrated in Mary Shelley’s work- both ultimately illustrate how going beyond the norm threatens culture, balance and authority. In other words, the process of crossing the threshold is critical to an individual being extraordinary, though their contributions may initially be viewed as negative and unwanted. Campbell’s monomyth theory, which outlines the hero’s journey, explores the idea of crossing the threshold.
