In the video “How webtoons are changing movies and TV,” Hyeonmi Kim creates a persuasive TedTalk using audience interaction, examples, and inspiration.
Audience Interaction
Audiences think of TedTalk as a impactful and inspiration corporation (Bentley University, 2015). Feeling included in the conversation feels odd, while unique, similar to the impact of a celebrity. Kim uses their reputation to interact with the audience in multiple grand forms, using logos as the main foundation for her speech. The purpose of this language contributes to the ability of the audience to stay engaged since her main ideas are revolutionary to the general public. While most examples occur in the concluding paragraphs, it also occurs during the introduction to webtoons. “Anyone can be a writer in a web story platform, from a fresh grad cartoonist to a housewife, to who, you know, who dreamed of being a novelist one day” (Kim, 2021, 6:09). “Webtoons are published in these open platforms where anybody -- you, me, a single mother in Pakistan, a teenager in Japan, anyone -- anyone can share our great stories to find an audience who are excited to consume our content” (Kim, 2021, 1:55). These quotes, combined with examples, shows the listener the diversity in the people writing and that her audience has that potential too. She does not reiterate her previous thoughts in the concluding paragraphs but makes a unique ending. She tells about what the future of webtoons could contribute, whether that is drawing houses, mythology, or goddess stories (Kim, 2021, 7:57). The idea may be seen as lackluster because it does not feel similar to the introduction, but it is rather to envision Kim’s future, inviting the audience to see it too. To get their mind moving at all of the possibilities that could come with webtoons and the extraordinary pieces of work that they could create. The last line is the most important example of her inspiration. She says, “The competition to hunt the best story in the world is on” (Kim, 2021, 8:05). The purpose of this line, especially as the last, without further detail, creates a feeling of urgency in the viewer because it sounds like a competition, leading the viewer to pick up on that urgency and begin making a product.
