Martin Luther King uses Logos and repetition to enhance his argument for civil disobedience. On the first page of Letter from Birmingham Jail King uses the logical method for nonviolent campaigns for the format of his letter saying, “1) collection of the facts to determine whether injustices are alive. 2) Negotiation. 3) Self-purification and 4) direct action.” King bases his entire letter on these four steps. In order to show that they are the steps of any nonviolent campaign. This is very logical because it is purely fact that these are the steps.
MLK also uses rhetorical devices to persuade the audience. MLK states In Letter To Birmingham Jail, “Why direct action, why sit-ins, marches, and so forth?” (King 7) MLK used rhetorical questions so the audience would have to think to themselves. MLK is showing the audience that by doing these actions is the only way they will be heard.
The Declaration of Independence Rhetorical Analysis In his 1776 articulate and cleverly crafted document, The Declaration of Independence, Thomas Jefferson expressively and emotionally establishes himself as a powerful speaker and persuades his audience through his use of parallelism and metaphors to advocate the freedom of a new nation and the rights of the people. Thomas Jefferson established himself to be a motivated and powerful speaker by asserting his credibility at the beginning of the document. Jefferson cites, ¨...the separate and equal station to which the Laws of Nature and of Nature's God entitle them…¨ Through a statement of fact, Jefferson is able to justify his reasoning of why we have the right to declare independence while accordingly undermining the power of the British monarchy. Repeatedly throughout the document, Jefferson addresses the reader using pronouns such as ¨We¨ or ¨Us¨ to bring a sense of unity, portraying our nation as a whole while constantly addressing the king as ¨He¨ to belittle the king, indicating he has no power.

Rhetorical Strategy Throughout King's letter, he uses an ethos rhetorical style to refer to the ethical aspects of the situation. The concept of ethos refers to the author's credibility in the subject matter. King was confident that with his knowledge and reputation, he could deliver a persuasive argument to those in authority to end segregation. King emphasized that discrimination harmed many citizens, especially African Americans. In the absence of other options, King became more visible and vocal in his protests in a non-violent manner.

Imagine you were part of a society where you had no rights, freedom , and you were judged because of what color your skin was. Well there was time when society did judge and discriminate against you. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. gave a speech called “I Have a Dream” at the Lincoln Memorial in front of a crowd of protesters for civil rights and for freedom. He also wrote a response called “Letter From Birmingham Jail” to 8 white clergymen that were giving him a hard time. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. uses both logos and pathos to describe a point using facts and evidence and or a language that arouses your emotions.
Cesar Chavez, a civil rights leader and labor union organizer, published an article on the tenth anniversary of the assassination of Martin Luther King, addressing the sufficent use of non-violence opposed to violent actions. Cesar writes in a persuasive tone to appeal to logos and the use of allusion to inspire the American people to utilize nonviolent actions on setting conflicts as an alternative to their go to violent encounters. Cesar’s use of allusion throughout his article e.g publishing on Martin Luther King’s tenth anniversary and mentioning Martin Luther, a widely known activist for nonviolence, brings the audience something familiar that they have either lived through to see this historical figure in action or have heard about and may have admired to further support his reasons on why nonviolent is the stronger way. Martin Luther King Jr. was an important figure in gaining civil rights throughout the 1960’s and he’s very deserving of that title as seen in both his “I Have a Dream” speech and his “Letter from Birmingham Jail” letter. In both of these writings Dr. King uses logos - logical persuasion - and pathos - emotional appeal - to change the opinions of people who were for segregation and against civil rights. Although King was arrested for a nonviolent protest, he still found a way to justify his actions with the use of logos and pathos. MLK uses both ways to gain the attention and agreement of the audience but, he uses pathos not just more, but in a more relatable way in order to appeal to his audience.
