‘I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed: ‘We hold these truths to be self-evident: that all men are created equal. I have a dream that one day on the red hills..’
This quote is one of the most famous rhetorical devices used in a political speech. The ‘I Have a Dream’ speech, written by Martin Luther King, has a lot of rhetorical devices in it. This increases the power of the speech.
Rhetoric is the form of persuasive speech of writing. Politicians have used Rhetoric devices forever to influence their audience to their side or their way of thinking. Rhetoric devices are not only used in politicians speeches, but also in commercials, art, television, movies and many more places.

Let’s take for example the Republican Donald Trump. Donald Trump uses a lot of paralipsis; He will introduce the topic by saying he doesn’t want to talk about it. In New Hampshire on December 1, he said: ‘But all of (the other candidates) are weak and they’re just weak’ ‘But I don’t want to say that because I don’t want to’ ‘So I refuse to say that they are weak generally, okay?’ The paralipsis used in this quote causes the audience to think about their opinion. Are the other candidates really generally weak, this causes an immediately raise of Donald Trump’s power.
The difference of our daily use of rhetorical devices and politicians using rhetorical devices is that they have a writer who makes them for their speeches. The rhetorical devices used in politicians speeches can be seen as deception, because they are conscious trying to manipulate us. The politicians manipulate us to believe in their ideas, so we will vote on them.
The most subtitle rhetorical devices is repetition of words. The words freedom, we, our, you, nation, healthcare are frequently used terms, mostly more than ones in a speech. These terms gives the audience a safe feeling, something politicians want. A safe feeling, causes you to believe and support the person who is saying
