MEDIA PORTRAYAL OF ABORTION…
Abortion is when a pregnancy is ended so that it doesn't result in the birth of a child. Sometimes
it is called 'termination of pregnancy'. There are two types of abortion treatment, 'Medical' and
'Surgical' abortion. Medical abortion makes use of the abortion pills. Some women feel that a
medical abortion is a more natural process. While surgical abortion involves a quick, minor
operation. Sometimes abortion happens on its own. In this case it is called miscarriage or
spontaneous abortion. But women can also choose to end a pregnancy by getting surgery or
taking medicine.

Columns of commentary favoring abortion rights outnumber those opposing abortion by
a margin of more than 2 to 1 on the op-ed pages of most of the nation's major daily newspapers.
Overall coverage of abortion tends to be presented, perhaps subconsciously, from the abortion-
rights perspective. The reasons why women have abortions are diverse and vary across the
world. Some of the most common reasons are to postpone childbearing to a more suitable time or

These factors can sometimes result in compulsory abortion or sex-
selective abortion. An American study in 2002 concluded that about half of women having
abortions were using a form of contraception at the time of becoming pregnant. Inconsistent use
was reported by half of those using condoms and three-quarters of those using the birth-control
pill; 42% of those using condoms reported failure through slipping or breakage. The Guttmache
Institute estimated that "most abortions in the United States are obtained by minority women"
because minority women "have much higher rates of unintended pregnancy."
Relating these reasons to the over representation of abortion rights in the media gives a more
focused image. Various conservative politicians and now a corporate consultant contends that,
"the culture in the newsrooms just assumes that abortion is right”. When the networks broadcast
an abortion story, the backdrop has often been the large word "abortion" with the first "O" in the
word stylized into the biological symbol for female. The networks could just as easily stylize
