Fall 2017 Performance Review On September 29, 2017, I saw the play “Rhinoceros” directed by Billy Houck at Fremont High School in the Shannon Theater. The play was about the appearance of a rhinoceros in a small town. People were quarreling about these rhinoceros; if there was a rhinoceros, if it had 1 or 2 horns, and if the rhinoceros with 1 horn came from Asia or Africa. However, people slowly started to turn into rhinoceros and rampage all around town. In the end, only the main character, Bérenger, was able to resist the urge to transform into a rhinoceros. I found the play to be very interesting as I was kinda confused in the beginning, but it ended up making a bit more sense in the end. In act 2, I also loved how two of the stage crew went out into the audience with rhinoceros masks on; the main character Bérenger ran out into the audience and was panicking about the rhinoceroses. When I saw that, I questioned if there was some people out in the audience with rhinoceros mask on in the beginning of the play because the actors were running around screaming and I was so confused. I noticed there were some mistakes in act 1, scene 1 where the actors were unsure of when it was their line and were stuttering when they were suppose or not say something. It kinda annoyed me because I wasn’t able to enjoy the flow of the lines and it spoiled a little bit of what would happen next. I really liked the person who played the main character Bérenger, James Kanuch, because they way he presented himself and how he was so in character was fun to watch. He was also the only one who didn’t mess up in act 1, scene 1; in fact, I don’t think he messed up at all. If he did messed up, he did a great job covering up his
