Thesis : In her story “ The Lesson” Toni Cade Bambara emphasizes social differences are caused by the economic differences of the world. These social differences and economic kids go through are connected together. Sylvia and Sugar differ especially when it comes to being able to deal with the reality of things not the way they envisioned it. Sylvia is not able to come to grips with the reality of what she saw.
The reading that caught my eye was “Who Rules America? The Corporate Community and the Upper Class” by G. William Domhoff. Domhoff wanted to argue that the upper class was not just one intertwining unit, but that the upper class also contains power by controlling economic and political decisions regarding our country. To gain better insight on his argument, Domhoff collected various types of data from reliable people on how the upper class go about their lives, and how their lives can directly and indirectly affect America. Domhoff started by talking about social class in general in America.
In James W. Loewen’s “The Land of Opportunity,” he states that social class affects the way children are raised. He discusses the inequality in today’s society and how the textbooks in high school do not give any social class information. The students in today’s time are not taught everything they should be taught. He states that your family’s wealth is what makes up your future. Loewen discusses that people with more money can study for the SATs more productively and get a better score than someone who has less money.
Born in Vancouver 1921, John Porter shattered the conventional image of Canada as a classless society and demonstrated the ethical inequality within our culture. In his research book The Vertical Mosaic, he proved Canada to be a highly stratified society. Important to the development of Canadian sociology, The Vertical Mosaic, provided Canadians with a reality check, unveiling the fact that our projected image is opposite to factuality and revealed the discrimination within power in our society. Within our current capitalistic society, people tend to disregard class and Canada is still viewed as a middle class society with ethnic inequality still as a ruling issue.
In A Framework for Understanding Poverty, Ruby Payne try’s to explain the behaviors and barriers of three social classes: poverty, middle class, and wealth. Beyond the social class of poverty, it’s a breakdown of the elements of the classes and the ‘hidden rules’ each one has. She stresses that these hidden rules aren’t taught in businesses or schools, these of which function as the hidden rules of middle class. Payne states these hidden rules aren’t exactly natural, they’re learned, and as one grows up in a particular class those rules are set in place. She lists all the rules in each class, and the differences are striking.

Some people are just a better person in general even without being born into a rich family he doesn’t know if a person has to be born into wealth to have natural class or just be classy on their own.

The lower-class is seen as the class that is struggling financially. They are the “blue collars” and “low wage workers” and people who work for other people. They are the social class with little to no college education. They are seen as the ones who rent properties and with little to no savings. They are seen as the social class that abuses of the welfare system.
Richard has always felt the unjust of race, and has felt how segregation made it hard for him to have a future. But when he gets a chance to get revenge on the whites, he refuses when he thinks ”Who wanted to look them straight in the face, who wanted to walk and act like a man.(200)” Stealing went against his morals of the right way to succeed and would not help the community appearance to the whites. The community as a whole is very religous but Richard does not share these beliefs, even with the persistence of his friends and family he says ”Mama, I don't feel a thing.(155)” This caused his friends to beg him, but in face of rejection they leave him alone.
Poverty and discrimination affects both main characters but in different ways. Richard is ashamed of the pity he is getting and Maleeka is bullied because of what she wears. Both feelings will stay with the main character for the rest of their lives and that's what truly arises emotion in the reader. Richard was so determined to prove he had money, he told his class he would donate 15 dollars to the cause. If he had 15 dollars he probably would have given them in rather than buying himself the food he desperately needs to survive.
After watching the video “people like us”, I believe that class is made by large number of people with similar economic status or position. On the other hand, you can find people who try to fit in upper social class i.e. “Tammy’s Story”. Tammy lives with her four children’s in a trailer. She works as janitor in a local burger shop. Her job helps her pay the bills.
John Green’s Looking for Alaska tells the story of Miles Halter and his adventures at an Alabaman boarding school. Miles falls in love with a peculiar girl named Alaska Young, whose mysterious persona entregues Miles from the beginning. Alaska’s traumatic past has lead to her present erratic behaviour, and she manages to get herself into trouble throughout the novel. Alaska’s sudden and shocking death has a lasting impact on Miles, as he struggles to find purpose after the death of his first love. Alaska’s character in particular demonstrates the concept of psychoanalytic theory, feminism and marxism.
There is lower, middle, and upper class, but there are also subcategories that fill the gaps in between, like the impoverished and the top one percenters. “Class in America”, written by Gregory Mantsios, addresses the myths and realities about socioeconomic class in America and how they affect American lives. His article highlights the unequal divide that has persisted over the course of history and will continue to manifest in the future. To introduce the existence of this issue, Mantsios states that this country’s citizens “don’t like to talk about class...or class privileges, or class oppression, or the class nature of society” (Mantsios 378). This is the case in America today because people are neglecting to acknowledge the existence of these elusive
The Big Picture: Social Class in the U.S. Basically, this video talks about social class. In class systems, people are ranked by both birth and individual achievements. Also, people are born into certain social classes, but are able to move through individual effort in class systems. The divide between the rich and the poor is increasing. I believe that richer people have more opportunities.
The lower class works for their living and spends what money they have on things they need. Whereas the upper class, usually has a higher education and better paying jobs than the other classes in America. Thus, heritage plays a big part in reasons of social classes.
