He ran for president in 1960, but was beaten by the younger John F. Kennedy. He went on to advocate against the Vietnam War and run for president again in 1968. Amidst multiple commercials and savage attacks over the media, Nixon remained calm and collected. Nixon would go on to win the presidency by nearly 500,000 votes.
Richard Nixon was the 37th U.S President from January 20, 1969 through August 9, 1974 and during his term, President Nixon would become one of the most talked about administration. This was due to the Watergate scandal; this would heavily over shadow his other accomplishments and bring the White House under the microscope. Nixon would tap phones and record conversations of people when he would have meetings. He did end the war in Vietnam and improved our relationships with China and the USSR. One of his objections in the United States was to try and bridge the divide in our cities and try to heal the war weary people of our nation, because of all the disagreements over Vietnam.
During the presidency of Nixon, he was able to come up with a domestic policy that seemed to have helped the United States and prove effective. Economically, he was very involved especially with trying to dettach the U.S. dollar from the gold currency to utilize the dollar to its maximum potential. He also removed excise taxes which basically put more money into people 's wallets. He also put a 10% tax on all imports into the U.S., this helped boost the economy.
In July 1960 the Democrats nominated John Fitzgerald Kennedy, who narrowly defeated Republican candidate Richard Nixon, a presidential candidate. Kennedy's first economic proposals were intended to counteract the effects of the economic recession for which it was necessary to increase public spending. Other measures were taken to help economically depressed regions and to raise the minimum wage of workers employed in interstate commerce. However, much of its national policy agenda was rejected by Congress.
Many people believe that Nixon may not be the best candidate for president. There is a great deal of evidence that supports that fact of Nixon being the best person to run our country, which was given in the prior paragraphs. 1) As President, Richard Nixon had a many accomplishment both in domestic and foreign affairs, he launched initiatives to fight cancer and combat illegal drugs, established price and wage controls, and introduced healthcare and welfare reform. Nixon also brought about legislation such as the EPA, OSHA, Clean Air Act and National Environmental Policy Act. These were important pieces of legislation that we still currently use today. The 2 most noteworthy of those acts are the EPA and OSHA. The Environmental Protection Agency was created to protect human health and the environment by writing and enforcing regulations.
He took difficult situations, such as Russia’s extensive weapon use and hostility towards the US and resolved this problem through his new foreign policy ideas. Without Nixon’s strong focus on foreign policy, events like the war with Vietnam could have continued and caused more damage to the United States. Nixon also showed he was able to adapt to all situations and interact with all leaders of different countries. Instead of focusing on only the negative aspects of Nixon’s presidency, he should be remembered for all of his positive achievements that contributed to getting the United States out of difficult situations. Now that we have talked about how films portray President Kennedy and President Johnson, next we will look at how films portray President Nixon. The film All the President’s Men was released back in 1976 and was based on a non-fictional book that was released in 1974 with the same name as the film. The Authors of the book and the main characters in the book and film, were the two reporters from the Washington Post that were investigating the Watergate scandal in which they had uncovered that President Richard Nixon was involved in the scandal and was also involved with trying to cover it up which lead to his resignation. The names of those two reporters/authors are Robert “Bob” Woodward (Robert Redford) and Carl Bernstein (Dustin Hoffman).
On November 8, 1932 the American presidential election was held. Democrat Franklin D. Roosevelt defeated republican president Herbert Hoover during the effects of the Great depression. It began in 1929 when the United States had severe unemployment, drastic declines in output, and deflation. The American People were looking for someone that would lead them through this rough crisis. It was not looking too good for president Hoover because the voters felt he was not capable to rebuild the country.
In my opinion Kennedy won the 1960 debate against Nixon although the radio listener believed otherwise. Kennedy is one of the greatest speaker from a political aspect. His charisma and confident mannerisms conveyed well to the population viewing the debate on television. Not only did his answer reflect well on his position but his body language show how sure he was on taking on the duty of being the next president of the United States. On the other hand, Nixon did not display this same type of confidence to the television audience but the radio didn’t see his nervousness.
