Freedom is our right but it becomes a privilege when we are faced with restrictions. We sometimes have to fight for our rights and work hard to gain privilege. We have fought many wars to gain freedom, such as the Civil War of 1861, where the fight was to earn the right to live freely and be treated as equal. Today, we are fighting for a similar right, the right to live. The US Constitution, Second Amendment provided us the right to bear arms. Our right to bear arms provided us freedom but when this right killed innocent people and children in school campuses, should we entertain gun ownership as a privilege? Rights are what we expect to have while privilege may require permission or one may have to work towards achieving it. “The right to bear arms” today has become a controversial topic when identifying its real meaning. This topic has been argued specifically as it refers to the right to own firearm as an individual or as “a well regulated militia” according to the Second Amendment. This argument was put to rest when Supreme Court ruled in favor of Heller in the District of Columbia vs. Heller case. The case favored Heller allowing him to own a personal firearm to be kept in his home. Another case followed suit with McDonald vs. City of Chicago allowing Mr. McDonald to own a handgun for his own protection (Arnold, 2015). Unfortunately, protection of ones own home may have been allowed as long as the weapon stayed in the home. When firearms are brought to school and used with the intent to kill or inflict harm, then gun control becomes the important subject. School shootings in Colorado, Connecticut, and Oregon were all caused by a gun falling in the wrong hands. Americans wept as the news unfold about the children massacred by behaviorally disturbed individuals in school
