America was great throughout the Civil Rights Movement because it ignited the passion of the people to fight for racial equality. There was a point in history in which Americans lost the desire to fight for what is right. When the racial issues reached a high in the 1960s, it helped people discover the drive to fight for equality and righteousness. They knew in their minds, and especially in their hearts, that there was something wrong with how blacks were being treated, and that something needed to be done. People began to take initiative to take action on the situation. Their actions proves the greatness of America during the Civil Rights Movement. The reasons behind the activists’ fury are plentiful. The two groups both had the same ultimate goal, equality among blacks and whites. However, they did have different approaches. The SCLC tried to get national attention through campaigns with the goal of civil rights policy reforms. The SNCC on the other hand was more localized. They carried out actions such as sit-ins and other nonviolent protests that were carried out with less political backing than the SCLC’s protests. (“Civil Rights Movement” History) Even with the difference in their approaches, both organizations helped to make large strides to the ultimate goal of racial equality. The Civil Rights Movement cannot be discussed without mentioning Martin Luther King Jr. He was one of the most, if not the most influential leaders of the entire movement. With King being the leader of the SCLC, he was more focused on using local campaigns to get national exposure. During the campaign in Birmingham, Alabama, the police intervened armed with clubs, firehoses, and police dogs and attacked nonviolent protesters, including some schoolchildren. The Black Panther party was a violent group of civil rights activists. A lot of the members included of inner-city blacks. The members were big into the violence side of things instead of settling things peacefully. The ideas behind their violent tactics came from their belief that the civil rights reforms would not make up for all of the harsh treatment and punishment that was given to the slaves. (“Civil Rights Movement” History) Overall, it is not that hard to find where the Black Panther party was coming from. Overall, throughout the Civil Rights Movement of the 1950s-60s, America was at its greatest. Americans in that time period did not put up with people’s crap. As history progressed, people began to lose that passion. Especially nowadays, people cannot take an insult without going to someone to cry and complain to. That’s not how it was during the Civil Rights Movement. People and protestors alike, had the desire and the passion to fight for what they believed and knew was right.
