This paper discuss on the exhibition “The Rise of the Celestial Empire: Consolidation and Cultural Exchange during the Han Dynasty” by critically evaluating the purpose of exhibition, the effectiveness of information delivery, and the efficacy of arousing public awareness on cultural heritage conservation and preservation.
The exhibition was set up on the three themes, “The Strengthening and Expansion of the Han Empire”, “Everyday Life during the Han Dynasty” and “The Technology, Culture and Cross-border Transportation of the Han Dynasty”, centering the emergence of the Han Empire, while the development of the Lingnan region of which Hong Kong located in was also mentioned. The elites were over-represented from today’s perception of the formation of a society, with a more bottom-up approach with social interaction as the corner stone of society and bearing in mind the larger population of commoners. Yet, the social hierarchy of the Han Dynasty, and most traditional monarchies after Shang, the elites, especially the royal lineage, had a dominance position in society and this makes the disproportional emphasis seemingly more plausible. 2) Sources of artifacts. This exhibition highly relied on display of artifacts, for which they are mostly evacuated from mausoleums such as Han Yangling(漢陽陵)and Chu Tomb(楚王墓). Elites were more able to afford more expensive and less perishable materials for daily use as well as sacrifices, better conditions together with a possibility of higher aesthetic values and more exquisite craftsmanship make these artifacts more attractive exhibits, affecting the selection of exhibits. 3) Easy content delivery.
