Zappos to most consumers is a well-known online retailer that started out by carrying in stock only shoes; yet today both their name and products have extended beyond what they could have imagined it would become. Nick Swinmurn founded Zappos in 1999 and Tony Hsieh initially came onboard as an investor, but now serves as its CEO (Uhl-Bien, Schermerhorn, & Osborn, 2014, p. W-120). Swinmurn prefers to keep a low profile and Hsieh is very public, which is why most believes that he is the founder of Zappos. Like most companies Zappos is not an overnight success, as their big break came several years after being in business and so did perfecting their customer service ways. They take pride in their employees and customer service as everything they stand for depends on both. Zappos is not recognized by the products that they carry or sell, they are famous for their customer service and the lengths that their employees go through to make customers highly satisfied.
