Risk-taking is someone doing a task and not knowing what will happen after, whether it ends in a good or bad way. People can take risks for many different reasons, the satisfaction of themselves, to help somebody else, etc. When people take risks there is no way to know what the result is going to be, I think that’s why a lot of people are willing to take risks, the majority of people believe that the result will be profitable to them. In Alan Gratz’s book ‘Refugee’ Josef, a young Jewish boy lives through his life as a refugee with his family as they try to escape to Cuba while Nazis try to confiscate Germany. For example, when the Nazis broke into Josef’s house in the middle of the night, he took [Ruthie] in his arms and wrapped her in a protective hug. “Hush now.”” (2 Gratz). This is a risk because if Ruthie and Josef were to keep running their mouths, she and Josef could get hurt as they weren’t following the Nazi's instructions. During this time, Josef was compassionate and maintained being courageous. In addition, as Josef and the other guys were arranging how they would take revenge, they came together “And they had done it. Just like that, they had taken the bridge” (255 Gratz). This is a risk because if Josef and the other Jews got caught before they finished, they could’ve returned to the same spot they were already in or worse. Josef doing this task reveals that he is brave and willing to protect his family. Furthermore, as Ruthie was explaining her refugee experience to Mahmoud, she started to explain how “Josef had died so [she] could live” (316 Gratz). All the risks taken ended up with one or more outcomes, all the risks Josef took were followed outcomes.
