Shackled is a suspenseful and thrilling novel written by novelist Tom Leveen. The story centers on sixteen year old Pelly, who was traumatized by the kidnapping of her friend Tara years ago at a mall. After multiple therapy sessions, medications, and mental treatments, Pelly feels like she can return back to her normal life and live like a normal teenage girl. Just as she´s ready to step out into the real world once more, her life takes an unexpected three hundred sixty degree turn. One morning, as she´s working at a local cafe shop, an odd man and young, timid girl walk in. However, this adventure of hers comes with many risks and dangers. Regardless, Pelly is determined to find the sick man and save her dear friend, even if it means dealing with evil itself. This novel is organized into nineteen chapters, all from the protagonist’s point of view. The first couple of chapters describe Pelly’s lifestyle after all the therapy and help she received after the incident with her best friend at the mall. At the beginning of the novel Pelly is a very vulnerable and weak sixteen year old girl who has trouble dealing her depression and anxiety. She works at a local cafe and tries to keep herself from socializing with anyone as much as possible. Everything is pretty calm in the first few chapters and the reader learns the difficult experience that Pelly lived through in order for her to be the way she is. Around chapter 4 is when some of the rising action begins. This is the chapter where Pelly sees her kidnapped friend Tara for the first time after that day in the
