The Government and the Question There are times when people will doubt their government, whether about their choices or about their actions. Often seen on the news, the government is a popular, controversial topic that affects the whole world. Each country has a different type of government that they follow, such as a democracy, republic, aristocracy, dictatorship, communist, etc. All of these have one thing in common: they are in charge of their people’s lives. The question arises when these three authors write about their opinion on the government’s role. Many people have heard of the story of Rosa Parks and her encounter on a bus where she was ordered to give up her seat to a white passenger. A little backstory of this is that Montgomery, Alabama had segregation laws back in 1955 where blacks had to move to the back of the bus to make space for the white passengers coming on if the white section was full. Continuing with the story, Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat and was arrested. After this happened, Dove said, “...Rosa Parks agreed to challenge the constitutionality of Montgomery’s segregation laws.” (Dove) Parks thought that the law was not fair and wanted to challenge Montgomery’s segregation laws. In doing this, she has created a movement that led to create the Montgomery Improvement Association (Dove). This gathered people such as Martin Luther King Jr. to spark recognition to the situation, to help make a change. Eventually in time, change comes from the result of the movement. Is it ever appropriate to go against the government? It is appropriate to go against the government if their actions are not morally right. There are many cases where it would not be appropriate. One of the reasons when it would be appropriate is when the government chooses what is best for them than the people. The second reason is when there is something that people do not think is right, people can speak out for themselves.
