The poem that I wanted to analyze for this weeks discussion is "Minor Miracle" by Marilyn Nelson. The "Voice" of the poem is that of the poet. This is implied in the first sentence where the author prefaces the poem stating, "Which reminds me of another knock-on-wood memory." The whole poem is recounted by the poet as if she was reliving a memory or telling the story to some friends.
Student Ashaby Byrd of 8B has been absent from school since March 29, 2015 until the end of the school term. The student was living with her father, Carlos Byrd, since the death of her mother from she was seven years old in Old Harbour Bay. Her father is a fisherman. Three months ago, he ventured to sea but was caught in the wrong vicinity by the police, which resulted in him being jailed to date. Since then, Ashaby had lived with her paternal grandmother from the same community.
In her essays, Elena Passarello explores how the voice can be able to define human beings, refine them, as well as its ability to connect people to each other. Also, it is a masterpiece that easily explains and breaks down the relationship between a song and a birdsong. Elena is inspired by her acting background to writing the book and collection of essays which result in a nice blend of personal narration and reportage. Elena carefully sets to find out what is the true feeling of making an utterance and what it really means to study the concept of human vocalization.
Poetry in literature is often marked significantly by a literary device or a special characteristic of the structure. In Robert Pack’s poem “An Echo Sonnet, To an Empty Page,” echoes throughout the poem create a tone of awe-solemn wonder, revealing the poet’s confused attitude towards the relationship between form and meaning and the inner conflict formed within oneself, dealing with the “voice” and the “echo.” A conversation then begins. The “echo” in this poem acts as the subconscious of the speaker, as opposed to a simple reproduction of the previous sounds. The speaker employs the “voice” as a confusing soul, who is deliberately seeking a response to its questions, and the “echo,” with its one word responses, provides the “voice”
Poetry is an effective means used to convey a variety of emotions, from grief, to love, to empathy. This form of text relies heavily on imagery and comparison to inflict the reader with the associated feelings. As such, is displayed within Stephen Dunn 's, aptly named poem, Empathy. Quite ironically, Dunn implores strong diction to string along his cohesive plot of a man seeing the world in an emphatic light. The text starts off by establishing the military background of the main protagonist, as he awaits a call from his lover in a hotel room.
This proves that Jack is confident about poetry because he is being inspired by other poetics and he is now starting to write his own poems. Throughout the book, Jack’s thoughts about poetry have grow from timid, then he changed to reluctant and enthusiastic, and now he is confident about poetry because he is now starting to enjoy poetry more and write his own
World War I was a war that Americans entered reluctantly, and a war which led to the replacement of progressivism by liberalism. Liberalism arose from a feeling of entrapment brought by the various regulations on industry and society, and embraced individualism to create a sense of liberation. Cars, especially the Model T, played a massive role in this by giving mobility to men and women, and creating a sense of freedom and independence (McGerr 228). The phonograph, psychotherapy, sports, amusement parks, dance, and music were other individualistic concepts, which provided pleasure. African Americans of the period began migrating to cities like Chicago, and enjoyed certain individualistic freedoms like music and boxing (McGerr 257), but were also banned from many theaters and places of leisure, and often created their own theaters.
Julia Alvarez, in her poem “’Poetry Makes Nothing Happen’?”, writes that poems do play a role in people’s lives. She supports her idea by using relateable examples of how poems might change someone’s life. Her first example is simple, poetry can entertain someone on long drives. This does not only aply to long dirves however, Alvarez uses this to show that poetry does not have to have a big influence on someone’s life, instead it can affect a person in the smallest of ways, such as entertainment. The second example describes poetry comforting someone after the loss of a loved one.

In “The Trouble with Poetry”, and “Introduction to Poetry” Billy Collins focuses on the issue of forced inspiration, and the lack of appreciation readers, and aspiring poets have for the feel of poetry. In “Introduction to Poetry”, Collins mentions that some poetry enthusiasts try too hard to find the meaning of a poem; to try and decipher it like some ancient hieroglyphics, that they forget that poetry is not an essay and does not necessarily have to have a distinct message. In stanza’s seven and eight, the speaker states that poetry should be felt, and that what one poem means to a group of people could have a completely different effect on another group. In stanza eight “Feel the walls” is the speaker’s ways of saying that one should feel a poem and let the poem speak to them, instead of searching for what they believe to be its true meaning.
“The Untitled Superhero Poem” by Tonya Maria Matthews is a great example of stream of consciousness, displays great use of enjambment, and is an ideal representation of witness poetry. One of the first things that a reader will notice is that there is no punctuation in the poem until the very last line. The absence of punctuation, also known as enjambment, causes the reader to continuously read the poem without stopping. By using this device, Tonya Maria Matthews is forcing the reader to take in everything that is said in the poem at once. This device also gives high energy to “The Untitled Superhero Poem.”
Her use of personification is a creative way to make her point without coming right out and saying that poetry should be looked at as a normal
Poetry is a very unique type of writing. Poetry allows people to express their emotions in a way they feel comfortable. Every poem has a meaning to it, whether it is talking about food, interest, or a moment in their lives. Readers often mistake the poet as the narrator, although in many cases this is true. Many poets are the narrators and the poems are about their personal life.
Furthermore, the superficial simplicity of Hughes’ poems is not meant to deceive, but to encourage readers to engage in poetry from different perspectives because there is more to the poem than meets the eye. Additional questions remain, however. Does Hughes’ experimentation with form threaten to mischaracterize or further objectify the subjects of his poetry? Does Hughes ascribe too much value to these ordinary objects and places? Are there limitations to Hughes’ experimentation?
Mary Oliver’s poem “Wild Geese” was a text that had a profound, illuminating, and positive impact upon me due to its use of imagery, its relevant and meaningful message, and the insightful process of preparing the poem for verbal recitation. I first read “Wild Geese” in fifth grade as part of a year-long poetry project, and although I had been exposed to poetry prior to that project, I had never before analyzed a poem in such great depth.
