The book "The Parrot In The Oven" whriten by victor martinez tells a story about a fourteen year old named Manny. Manny is a “young man” living at home with his parents and siblings in Fresno, California. him and his faimily are not wealthy but not too poor. the book teaches you that coming of age takes many experiences and issues to help an young man learn and grow. while reading this book you can relate to the problems that Manny has to face.
Everyone goes through the transition from childhood to adulthood. Boys become young men, and girls become young women; this is a significant stepping stone in the “journey to maturity.” Of course, becoming mature does not happen over night. Instead, it is a long process of learning from experience, which gives the young adult a new outlook on life and a new set of skills. In the short story "Rite of Passage" by Doug Beardsley, the narrator is an inexperienced but determined hockey player. Intro: The film Stand by Me is a coming of age story directed by Rob Reiner, it is based on Stephen King’s Novella The Body. The film is about the transition of four boys from childhood to adolescence and the rites of passage they experience throughout their journey. The film makes use of symbolism in a variety of forms to represent certain ideas and concepts. An example of symbolism is the train tracks the boys take to find the body, this represents the path they take in life.
The concept of adulthood represents not only the sum of one's experiences, but also the determination of one's place within society. Adulthood is formed through the experiences of the individual. These experiences catalyze the acceptance of a social role, as opposed to title or paycheck. Finally, the acceptance of an individual's social role initiates a process of social unity. In this way, the sum of a person's experience and the changes that result from said experiences present the evolution of child into adult.
There always comes a moment in a person 's life when one has to grow up, which is sometimes known as coming of age. The period is characterized by a young person who undergoes transition into an adult stage, thus learning to act and live like an adult. While the process of development occurs naturally as an individual advance of his age, it can also be influenced by occurrences, which force the person to grow faster. These differ in every culture and some may even appear brutal or abusive to many outsiders, an example would be a Maasai warrior must kill a lion single handedly, tattoos and mutilation after a certain milestone in age. The ones that are more familiar to all would include the courtship, wedding or funeral. According to our text, “ceremonies such as christening, puberty rituals, marriage and funerals, which we hold whenever a member of society undergoes an important change status, within the lifecycle of the group, are considered rites of passage.” (Crapo, 2013 para. 2) Rites of passage are an important part of tradition that often symbolizes a transition from childhood to teenager to adulthood and they even give off a sense of manhood to their family as well as their community.
Each culture has several examples of rites of passage that occur as early as birth and as late in life as death. One good example of a rite of passage is a high school graduation, because it marks a young adult’s transition from a student to a graduate. When you analyze the graduation ceremony, each phase can be seen and explained quite clearly. The first of the three phases in a rite of passage is called the separation phase. It is defined as the part of the rite of passage when the person is removed as a member of his or her previous society.
Alicia Wilson is and special education teacher that I have known for a year through subbing in the Parkway School District here in St. Louis, MO. She is the lead teacher for all of the staff that services special needs students at Shenandoah Elementary.
